Could really use some urgent advice on diet for my hound please.
I'm devastated, my beautiful, cheeky girl Blondie, has just been diagnosed with liver disease and impared kidney function. She's only 5.
Currently, she's on diuretics to take her grossly distended abdomen down and I'll get some milk thistle for her tomorrow. but, I've read the correct diet is crucial.
Any experience or advice on this would be greatly appreciated.
Kate

Low protein for kidney disease - if you don't want to use vet's recommendation you could speak to Burns. Not had any experience of liver disease tho'. What did your vet recommend?

If you read homeopathic books its the quality of the protein that's important .. Eskimos apparently eat nearly all protein and have no kidney disease. Check out Don Hamilton's book Homeopathic Care of Cats and Dogs - my Bridge boy was on loads of necessary meds and I did a blood test every 3 months or so to check he was coping. His liver and kidney function tests went out of normal so I got the book and gave him a quarter teaspoon of Sodium Bicarbonate/Baking Soda daily (30kg lurcher) with alfalfa and the readings went back into normal. I'd not feed a complete food if there are kidney problems as complete foods take up a lot of fluid, greyhounds rarely drink enough and that stresses the kidneys more .. there are some good threads on here about raw feeding. A friend does feed complete to a dog with kidney problems and she spoke to Burns helpline and now replaces some of the Fish and Rice (I think it's that flavour) with their Hypoallergenic Mixer which is only about 9% protein but I'd also try a good homeopathic vet especially as she's a young dog My vet is Chris Day in Faringdon, Oxon .. your vet can't refuse you a second opinion and as Chris is a vet all his treatment is reclaimable from your insurance company I also gave mine Neem Sticks (from Neem Genie) as they're a natural diuretic and I could reduce the drugs my boy had to take and like you say Milk Thistle is excellent Good luck with her Julie X

Thanks for that but, unfortunately, further tests have shown both her liver and kidneys to irreparably failed. She will be making her way to the bridge later this evening.

What a sad story - but I hope there will be some happy memories when it stops hurting.

Oh Kate how very sad but be glad that she had a wonderful time with you and knows she was loved- not all hounds are that fortunate so she's a very lucky girl.
Sending you hugs too

I am so very sorry Kate, Blondie was far too young to leave you. Run free and strong again at the Bridge Blondie, and know you take your mum's love with you sweetheart. jackie x
