Hi all, I've not been on here for a while, but would appreciate some advice from you all.
Blue has always had a rotting mouth, he only had his 4 canine teeth left, and yesterday was time for yet another extraction. The took his 2 top canines out, and we had been warned it was a big procedure, but he had an abscess on the root poor man.
We took him back to the vet at around 11 last night, as he just wasn't settling. Wired eyes, wouldn't stop whining, and up and down all the time. the night vet gave him a shot of morphine based pain killer, which she hoped would also settle him.
He wined and howled all night poor man. Today he's not much better. He ate sloppy weetabix for breckie, and we got his Rhymadil and antibiotic down. The vet said we could go back, and they would give tramadoll on top, but knowing how awful that is to humans (very trippy!!) I'm not sure we we should just try to stick it out?
To make matters worse, he has to go into kennels tomorrow for the weekend, as I have a weekend in London booked, which I can' cancel or change. He's always been fine before, even when he had 12 teeth out at once.
I'm feeling very guilty at the moment.
Any advice at all?

Is your morphine based pain killer Vertergesic? If so check out the thread about it and many of our dogs have had bad reactions to it I have an idea that normal greyhound anasethetics take about 4 days to leave their system .. did your vet use one that's ok for greys? If not that may be the problem as greys can't get rid of the barbiturates and it just re-circulates round and round their body and can kill them and I'd be very careful with him and may take him back to the vet tho to check he's ok and like you say probably not for more stuff (tooth abcess poor boy ) Hope he's ok... J x

Oh poor lad, really hope he is settling now Willow had a big tooth out a while ago, healthy tooth and root but receeding gum and infection in it. We had an awful night with her too Wish I was closer, he could happily come here instead of going into kennels

I wonder if it is a Vetergesic reaction again? Biggly had all four of his canine teeth out in one go and did really well. Lot of hugs for Blue Jo x

If it's not the vetergesic I'd be trying the tramadol. If he's in pain he'll benefit from it. Although some dogs do have a bad reaction to it an awful lot don't. Sapphys been on it since she's been ill and is fine and it was really good for Gracie when she had her leg amputated. My vet reckons that on the whole it is very well tolerated by most dogs, can make them drowsy but that's not always a bad thing. Poor Blue

hi all, thanks for the replies, he seems to have turned a corner now, much more settled. The vets are very good with hounds, the owner has a lurcher. even the night vet commented that she would use a special tiny needle as greyhounds are very sensitive.
he took his rymadryl this morning, and has actually snoozed quietly this evening too.
the kennel he goes to is very small 5 dogs max, he has been known to let blue sleep inside, so he will be looked after. we will see if my inlaws can take them the first night.
he enjoyed a slow walk in the woods this afternoon.
thanks again for reassuring me.
