Ozzy has been with us for 6 weeks now and has settled in really well. I'm a bit worried about his weight as he needs to gain a few more pounds and I have been giving him extra small meals. Mixing fresh meat or fish with his Burns dry food. But the more I mix food the more softer he's poos are even runny and very windy Advice please I know all about fortifying food but not for dogs thanks Anthea x

Hi anthea, its sometimes just 'them'! milly is a bit on the ribby side, i spent months mithering she was too thin. The vet says shes fine and healthy, her nose is wet and shes shiney. she does burn off lots of energy tho ;D, I think he looks great, xx (well jel!!)

It's perhaps just him settling in and feeling a bit stressed. They don't always show how they're feeling, but adjusting to his new surroundings and building new relationships will use up some energy, resulting in a lower weight. If you want to up his food, you could maybe try increasing his carbs rather than his protein. Add a bit of cooked pasta to his meals, assuming he's OK with wheat, or maybe mashed potato. Hopefully, that should be less likely to result in the gastric side effects. It may also be that Burns doesn't suit him - I've heard of quite a few hounds losing weight on it. The other thing you could try is keep him warmer to save him burning calories up. Daisy is a wuss and lives in a jumper this time of year, even with the central heating on As already said, he doesn't look bad, just slightly built Moira x

My grey lost lots of weight when fed the Burns recommended amount so I asked the vet and she said just feed her more of the Burns. I did and she put on weight quite quickly, so I then reduced the amount a bit and she lost weight more quickly than she put it on, so I have increased the amount again.
She weighs around 26kgs ideally and the Burns recommended amount is 260gms. I feed her at least 360gms! She does get stressed every week on bin day and less so about a few other things so I think this uses up more calories.
And as 123lurcherlover has said - some are just ribbier than others - but I try for the 2-4 ribs showing, preferably 2.

You could try the Burns with Maize as that's good for putting weight on .. I forget what they call it but it's on the bag Like Moira says you coud add a few other things - oil is good for weight gain but add it slowly and a little at a time or it'll upset his tum .. you could use oily fish too. I think Burns suggest that dire-rear can be due to too much food so swopping to another type of Burns could be the answer An extra feed should also help but like has been said they often lose weight when they first are rehomed cos they're stressed ... I had a problem with Cesar my greyhoundxgerman shepherd where I tried lots of different foods because he kept having runny poos as he has a sensitive stomach. Nothing to do with intolerances. it is the way he is. The best food I have found that stops this is CSJ Champ food. They have a web site and also suppliers throughout the uk. At night I also give him a 1/3 of a tin of Chappie meat mixed in with the dry. This is real crap tinned dog food but is very easily digested which really helps. I know if he has not had that little bit of meat as he will have the runs the next day.

I wouldnt worry. Barney is a very stiff whippet and thicker set where as Ozzy is finer boned. If your comparing the two you will end up over fattening Ozzy he isnt meant to be as broad as Barney. If you keep mixing food or giving to much it will cause him to be runny. Keep him on the basic diet he was on and leave him be. He will also gain muscle mass and is still young so needs to mature and fill out naturally

''Chappie meat mixed in with the dry. This is real crap tinned dog food''
No it isn't
I wouldn't feed only Chappie but it certainly is not crap. Over the years my dogs have always loved it especially the original. It may not be Fortnum and Mason but it NOT crap.
