The lovely rough coat coat Lupin has little black beasties on her. I don't think they are fleas as they don't seem to hop about. They look more like little flies or beetles and when exposed the bury back down into the hair. Found in the classic flea area just above the tail root. Treated with Stronghold yesterday but not easy to get the fluid down onto the bare skin through the rough coat. Not helped by her not liking being fiddled with in any way and doing a very good impersonation of a snake. Any ideas what these beasties are ? How quickly will the Stronghold work if a all ? Can I use a flea shampoo as well ? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated .

Any chance of capturing one and dropping it into the vets for an identification? You may then be able to get an appropriate treatment if one is needed.

Sounds classic fleas to me. Stronghold should start to work within an hour BUT you need to treat ALL your dogs or they will just keep re infesting each other. 48 hours after strongholding give them dogs a bath and then comb through with a childs nit comb. I would also go to the vets and get a very good household spray to help keep any that have left the dogs at bay. They should in effect get back onto the dogs at some point though and feed so the stronghold will kill them and stop an infestation. Re treat again in a month just incase there are any left in the house. Be careful when you switch the central heating on though if the dogs are not treated then any dorment eggs will hatch and it could happen again.

Thanks so far. I got hold of one last night and it was like a small black beetle about 2 or maybe 3mm long with a thin body. It crawled along my finger and didn't jump and was not easy to crush between finger and thumb.I remember a couple of years ago my old broken coat had similar beasties crawling on her belly. At that time I would have used Frontline and as she was more or less black they were not as easy to spot. Lupin is a blondie so they are easier to see. I will take your advice though bathing the wriggly snake is a fairly epic affair. I would really like to know what these beasties actually are and will have a cage ready when I comb her through and hopefully will capture one for identification. Could they be lice ?

Nope sounds like fleas to me they are very thin bodied and very hard to crush between your nails. They would not have jumped because having fed they would have been sluggish due to the treatment and probably already dying. As you can see this is hugely magnified they are usually only a couple of mm's through on the body almost flat. Its ticks that are fatter and fuller bodied

Them is the beasties ! What you say makes complete sense re sluggishness and not jumping. At least I have them on the run. The picture is excellent. Very many thanks for taking the trouble Lisa.

P.S. Don't get me started on ticks, she is a magnet and Stronghold seems to have no effect.
