My friend has a large standard poodle and they spend a fair bit of time abroad in spain. The last time they were there Daisy found and before anyone could stop her, ate, a chunk of rotting goat. She was subsequently very ill and nearly died, spending several days in critical condition at the vets and as the local farmers also slap poisen over a lot of dead carcasses to kill foxes its very important that she doesnt get the chance to repeat her scavenging ! So they are looking for a lightweight muzzle that will allow her to pant etc as its very hot there but not eat stuff and I seem to remember people here talking about a muzzle that had a bit that clipped in to stop them eating stuff . . . ? Anyway if anyone could recommend a suitable muzzle that would be great - I'm guessing that a greyhound one would probably be suitable as standard poodles have long noses and and a similar sized head. Thanks

The Breezy muzzles that Cadbury sells are great tho Lucy can manage to get a little piece of something thro the gaps if she tries really hard and I don't get there in time but they're lightweight and come in at least 2 sizes ... PM Cadbury and she'll help J x

Another fan of the breezy muzzle here Noel was at the vets every few weeks with tummy trouble after he'd eaten something from out of a hedge, there wasnt any food that he couldnt find on our walks! Since wearing the muzzle out and about all the time weve not had one tummy problem Like Julie suggests, if left long enough alone with food it is still possible for them to eat small amounts through it, but not if you are with them Sarah x

Oh my gosh, that must've been so frightening There are box muzzles that are very solid and are sold with stool-guards to prevent the eating of, well . . . stools - the stool-guard is the 'clipped in' bit you're thinking of . They represent a very reliable, if large and clunky, way of ensuring that nowt whatsoever can be eaten! Can post a link if you think one might fit the bill? Jo X

Here's the link to Greyhounds of Eastern Michigan - Shipped from the USA at a not-bad-at-all price, and helping hound rescue at the same time www.gemgreyhounds.net/store-2/?wpsc=lc&wpsccat=16Just just email them for an estimate on the cost of sending your order to the UK . They're lovely and really helpful The 'kennel muzzle' is what we'd know as a 'box' muzzle (various sizes and colours ), and the matching stool guards are on the same link . The 'muzzle keeper' looks good, too, for on-lead dogs - I think I'd worry about it snagging/throttling while off-lead, though. Here's the one we bought for Barney (and we've since got a smaller pink one for Madam Twirly ;D) They can breathe fine and pant but can't drink when wearing them . . . and they don't even try eating contraband through THAT! ;D ;D ;D ;D Jo x

Putting Micropore tape over the nose-end of the muzzles on Nettie's link would also work a treat as they're semi filled-in anyway Jo x

As a matter of interest for those who have need of a closed in muzzle to prevent their hound from picking up and consuming unmentionable substances I can now suggest the following. Forget ordering the American kennel muzzles, just order the stool guards, they do sell them as a separate item. These are much cheaper to purchase on their own obviously, and a lot less bulky to parcel up. Purchase a Box Muzzle from John at Midland Greyhound www.midlandgreyhound.co.uk/gallery.html and attach stool guard to outside of box muzzle using the cable ties supplied. The careful application of a heated metal skewer to the box muzzle will provide the holes through which to thread the second cable tie. Hey Presto - job done. Jackie x

We broke Sapphys poo eating habit by using a regular box muzzle (from Nicky on gap) with Silver Duct tape stuck round the front but not the top of it. To let air through made lots of tiny holes in the tape with a pin. Mine can all eat freely through a breezy, not long ago Gracie was running around holding a dead crow through one
