Hi Sam, sounds like you put a lot of careful thought along with your vet in to what would be best for Dickie and I think you've done the right thing. I wish we'd had the chance to opt out of vaccinating Mou here in France but our vet was obliged to do it even though he didn't really want to! To be honest I don't really think the vaccinations caused Mou's bone cancer to spread to her spine because a month or so before the boosters were due she was starting to show signs of discomfort and was crying out when she tried to get up from her bed along with a few other issues so it was likely just bad timing that we lost her so soon after her boosters and when you're so upset it's easy to focus on that and use it as something to blame for her death. Just like your boy, Mou had no probs after the amp and through her chemo and was difficult to slow down once she got used to using three legs so we expected to have much longer with her than 5 months and it was a shock to see her go down hill so quickly. I hope Dickie continues to do well and I'm glad you've come to a decision that you feel happy with and can get on with having fun with him. Hugs to both of you. Sian. x

Sian, I spoke to Diana James after you wrote that it was law to vaccinate in France because it was something I had never come across. Its no longer law here for all dogs and cats to be rabies vaccinated or any other vaccinations, the only dogs that must be rabies vaccinated are Category 1 and 2 dogs.
Cat 1 dogs are:
Staffordshire terrier or American Staffordshire terrier (dogs called "pit bulls") Mastiff (dog called "boerbulls") Tosa. Note : Staffordshire terrier breed is the former name of the breed American Staffordshire terrier.
Cat 2 dogs are:
bred Staffordshire terrier or American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler breed, Tosa breed, Non-registered in a studbook recognized by the Ministry in charge of agriculture and can be compared morphologically dog breed Rottweiler.
Namely : the dog breed Staffordshire bull terrier is not part of potentially dangerous dogs.
Sam, for what it is worth I would have made the same decision as you did, Indy wasn't vaccinated for the last 4 years of his life because of his reoccurance of the tumour on his leg.

Hi Nettie, our vet did consult with several other vets in France and took it higher but was told annual vaccinations are still neccessary. We also had the issue of invalidating Mou's pet passport had we not had the rabies done and assuming she'd lived we wouldn't have been able to return to the UK nor travel between other EU countries without a valid rabies booster which we do almost every week for work and the dogs come with us! Thanks for your comment though. Sian.

Indy will have been breaking the rules here then as he wasn't vaccinated for the last 4-5 years of his life, although no one ever checked he was vaccinated except of course, his rabies vax so he could travel here. Just wondering who is supposed to enforce that law, our French vet has never even mentioned their annual vaccinations. But then again, this is France and the law here is a bit of a postcode lottery!
