I've been toying with the idea of treating the dogs for lungworm for ages but not done it because I just don't like the idea of dosing them all with so much drug. However after Peppa ran back to eat a pile of dog sick which I know had slugs on (norty coobeastie!) she is now on day 5 of a 7 day Panacur treatment. She has had a bit of an occasional cough for a while which i've always put down to her munching on things she shouldn't but now I'm wondering if it might have been lungworm? Anyhoos no doubt I'll see if it has gone away once this weeks tretment has finished. She was a lot livelier yesterday than she has been for a while - but that might just be coincidence.
Buuut....what now??
Do I go to Advocate them all monthly as a preventative - but that doesn't stop tapeworms (and they are probably more likely to get tapeworm with the amount of dead things they eat) so they would still have to be treated for that as well, and what do I do about Flea and Shay who might have the collie MDR1 reaction to it?? Do I routinely treat them all with Pancur for 7 days as a just in case eventhough this isn't a preventative just a cure?
Does anyone know what kind (if any) long term damage could be caused by lungworm?
I'm having a bit of a panic because there are just so many slugs about this year because of the wet weather and I really don't want any lasting damage done to the dogs just because I couldn't make my mind up about how to deal with it.
Any advice?? I would ask my vet but I'm such a cynical git that I expect that he will just point to the particular product he has on the shelf!
