We gave Trixie a wormer Wednesday night. She didn't eat her food that evening and she didn't eat anything yesterday (but I did cook up some turkey and rice for her) scoffed the turkey left the rice . But it's the same story this morning she doesn't want her regular food (Austrailian Scientific Greyhound mix). It is a really good food for her and she has been eating it until now. We havn't had Trix long only 2 weeks. She passed a few worms and had a runny tummy and was a bit sick yesterday too. I've put that all down to the wormer but I'm just worried she isn't eating (apart from meat) and I can't afford to keep giving her that. Is this normal for greyhounds to go off food when they have an upset tum? Should I just let her wait till she is feeling better and eating normaly? I'm not sure what to do!

I wouldn't panic yet .... she probably feels pretty rough after getting rid of the worm burden and being sick. I would try chicken and rice again today - hopefully her apetite will return soon.

Like lurcherlot says she must feel grim at least she'll feel better once the horrible things have been passed thro .. just have a look too - is your Aussie Formula for retireds or is it one of the high protein ones for racing dogs? Less than 20% protein is a good guide usually ... You'll probably have to worm her again as the wormer will only clear what's there yesterday and there may be eggs left which will hatch Watch for eggs in her poo (like rice grains) or if she doesn't look well you can worm again ... I think most wormers say leave about 14 days between doses but the instruction sheets should say Julie x J x

Thank you! She had two small bites of breakfast and then lost her interest so I'll cook up the rest of the meat I've got for her.
Thanks for the tip about re worming as I wasn't sure if I needed to reworm her again - poor baby. I'm thinking of getting her booked in the vets some time soon for an overall check up and we'll pick another wormer up for her then.
I was thinking of perhaps trying her on a different feed from the Austrailian mix as that was what she was fed at the kennel - she is an x racer - and as she's no longer racing maybe she doesn't need that type of food anymore? Or maybe it is good as it's specific for greyhounds..?

Must admit that one's a new one on me, never heard of Australian Scientific Greyhound mix before, but I'm guessing this is it? threesteps.de/Dogfood-Nuggets/Australian-Formula::59.html?XTCsid=db87d04d2c0a3726d4ea8be2359e43a0Advanced high performance scientific racing diet. Creatine enhanced and with high grade vitamins. Chelated trace minerals for improved bio-availability. Contains premium quality chicken, fish, rice, corn and selected vegetables. Formulated to give supreme quality and performance. Performance through research. Featuring Glutamine 250mg/kg.
I think I would be considering a change of diet as this is specified as a racing diet. Maybe not the best choice for her now. As for her not eating if she actually passed worms then as Julie has said I would certainly look to worm her again soon, but be advised by your vet as to when to do this. She should begin to feel a whole lot better once she has gotten rid of the worm burden. Jackie x

I personally wouldnt use Johnsons or Bob Martins wormers which can be bought in pet shops, I used one years ago on my little cross breed and it made her really ill. I've always used drontal for my dogs, there's also variations of it a bit cheaper on Vetuk, also milbemax but you have to get that from the vets as its not available without prescription. Drontal has on one occasion made one of mine sick but now I don't worm them with their meals, they have them midday with a little treat rather than a big meal.

If she's got such a worm burden I'd agree with the others and do her with something like Drontal Plus which should kill most of the worm species .. tape, round, hook and whip worm I think it does. Apparently unlike horse wormers none of the dog wormer stays in their body so check with your vet or where you buy it from (online is usually cheaper) Whats the protein level in the Aussie Formula? If you feed her too much protein (in my experience) she can be hyper, naughty, stressed etc etc so less than 20% is better and there are lots of specific ones for greyhounds if you want to feed a complete .. at our RGT kennels we always feed Burns which isn't just for greys but is a good one Welcome to Gap Juliex

It's always a good idea to have a vet check plus it'll get Trixie used to going to the vet. We feed csj www.csjk9.com/ it's good value and suits our dogs as we have two with sensitive tums.

Totally agree with Sue about 'over the counter' wormers. I would certainly recommend you go for a good wormer from the vet, I've found milbemax suits my lot just fine. Jackie x

I use Drontal wormer on my grey - but get it from Vet UK as it's much cheaper than from our local vet. I phoned the manufacturers re second dose when mine had worms and they told me to do it 2 weeks later.
Don't know why you weren't advised to feed lower protein food for retired grey - should be max 20% protein. There are earlier threads on here about food and everyone has their favourite. I feed Burns Pork & Potato but it is expensive.
The other recommendation I picked up from this forum is to feed white fish and boiled potato for a greyhound upset tum. Some find chicken too rich - weird I know - and wheat and rice both seem to disagree with my lovely Gizzi. She always had loose stools and was slightly itchy before I went onto pork & potato. I do have to feed quite a bit more than Burns recommend to keep her weight on, which is strange as most manufacturers recommend too much.
I'm coming up to a year with Gizzi and she is still a work in progress, but things are improving nicely. I did have to worm her about every 2 months at first as she did keep having worms, but last time was clear so will leave it 3 months this time.
