Tilly is on yet another course of antibiotics and this has been going on since last September. I was wondering if other gappers had similar experiences where an infection seemed to get better whilst on antibiotics only to return a couple of weeks after the course of abs had finished. A sample of Tilly's discharge was sent to the labs and identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and her abs are marbofloxacin which were the ones showing the most sensitivity. We are taking her to see the vet in a couple of weeks (half way through the 4 week course). I am wondering whether or not this course of action is what others would expect or what other options we could ask about. Tilly isn't 'poorly', but as her mum and dad, we can tell she isn't herself

Well Dan was on antibiotics from December to June, he was on a combination of Norocalv & Metronidazole & when he finished the course the infections reoccured, however he was on heavy duty immune suppressants. Is it worth getting a 2nd opinion as without either trying a different antibiotic or taking a longer course I don't know what else to suggest, sorry

Sorrry Tilly is not herself I don't know how old Tilly is and much depends on her age and the dosage. Hope she is feeling "herself" soon Maryx

I would have thought that if the ABs were proper for the infection it should have been sorted by now .. could there have been more than one infection? When Tig had Pasteurella (caught from bunnies or cattle apparently) I think she had two infections strains and had more than one AB and the swab took a long time to culture apparently so the vet thought I was being neurotic (nothing new there LOL) until the infections 'showed themselves' .. If you want to try something natural check out Neem Genie's Colloidal Silver spray - CS has been long known to kill infections and have no side effects but the problem has always been getting it into the body insufficient amounts and quickly- Dave of Neem Genie has developed a harmless but very effective carrier spray which gets just about all the CS into the body at once and he's having amazing results with it- he's working with a doctor too and she's using it in her practice All crossed you find something to help Tilly J xx

Sorry to read this about Tilly and hope she improves My sister is on antibiotics nearly all the time as she has repeated water infections This has been going on for nearly 2 years and they cant find out what causes it. She is a very healthy person in spite of this. I know she is a human but it might put your mind at rest

As you know, Mayo has been on abs almost constantly for 5 years. He had a few months off them last year, but had to go back on them due to a flare up of his illness. Admittedly his case is slightly different, in that they're needed to control (but not completely destroy) intestinal bacteria, but it's the lesser of two evils as the consequences of not taking them are drastic. I'd ask if there's any chance of them giving Tilly an antibiotic pessary, that will hopefully act more effectively in-situ and means she can have a smaller overall dose. I think with the rise in MRSA we all worry more about over-use, but problems have come about from the use of broad spectrum antibiotics. When used appropriately and responsibly the negatives are reduced. Tilly has been swabbed to determine the most effective antibiotic for her bacteria and I think this shows that your vet is acting sensibly. I'm always willing to try a more naturopathic approach to healthcare and have used many remedies including a colloidal silver spray myself with good results. However, whether naturally occuring or developed in a science lab, all drugs and treatments can have side effects, so it can be a matter of trial and error finding the best combination for your needs. As already said, there are many humans who take long term abs for various conditions without serious side effects. Sue's advice re. protecting Tilly's intestines is excellent and something which you could do very easily Julie's also made a good point about there being a secondary infection, so re-swabbing may be appropriate too. Big hugs for Tilly and here's hoping the latest round does the trick Moira x

Thanks folks I feel I can start making a list of questions for my vet now... I was at a loss and as I'm not a 'medical' person I felt as if I had no alternative but to just accept that the vet knew best (which he probably does ;D) but to have a little knowledge about the things I was concerned about will certainly help, I'm sure
