Tracy will be 8 in August and 3 weeks ago was diagnosed with arthritis. Wrist and shoulder pain on one side and reduced flexibility in both hips. She has been taking Onsior and I read that this is a form of Previcox. She's also taking Glycoflex III twice a day. I'm just a bit bothered that up to this point, there isn't the kind of improvement I was hoping for To my mind she is still limping markedly on her front left leg when she first gets up from her bed, however the limp reduces as she gets moving but does not disappear completely. She can still manage stairs and will bouce about playing at times Before that she had Yumove which did not help at all. I do realise that Tracy is not a young dog and must expect health deterioration etc but I hope she could be better than this. Want to give these meds a chance and have another appointment with vet at end of June but thinking of going back sooner. Any advice (even though this subject has been widely talked about before) would be much appreciated. Jo

Just to up-date this post for anybody in a similar situation in the future. After taking Previcox (Onsior) for a month, there was no noticeable improvement, indeed she struggled to get down three steps into the garden after having had a short run earlier that day. The vet has now put her on a course of PLTs and the signs are already very encouraging. She is getting up from her bed more easily and picking up her toys to play and squeak them She is still taking Glycoflex III which apparently takes about 6 weeks to be effective. Hope this might help anybody in the future Jo

my two r ecent bridge babies had arthritis and were prescribe metacam which I found helped them enormously. One of them was prescribed PLT but as she wasn't insured for this particular problem (she had been badly beaten which resulted in a smashed shoulder and it was this shoulder where the arthritis was worse so was classed as a pre-existing condition) I had aprescription and bought them from internet. Sadly, before she could make use of them she developed osteo sarcoma in the shoulder and so I can't tell you if they worked or not. My other girl couldn't take them as she had reactions to steroids (now have about 100 of them sitting in my cupboard - such is life!)
All I can say is that sometimes these different drugs take longer than others to show any signs of improvement and different hounds react differently. Metacam worked best for mine. I do hope you find something that helps as it's so upsetting to watch them in discomfort.

The PLTs have worked well for Tracy, she is much more mobile. From 4 tablets per day, she is now on 2 tablets per day and then hopefully down to 1 per day. In addition, the vet warned about side effects such as gaining weight and drinking more water but thankfully neither of these things have happened Glycoflex III does not appear to have made very much difference to her so we are looking to other supplements. She is also having home-made treats with turmeric to help. The post from Houndie indicates PLTs were needed for her hound that sustained injuries and then resulting arthritis; Tracy's problem seemed to manifest after she had run quite intensively on the beach with our other younger hound. Hopefully the PLTs have worked to counter the effects of the run and she can be maintained on supplements into the future Jo

PLTs went down to 1/2 tablet per day and the limping returned so she has gone back to 1 tablet per day. She needs blood test to continue on these. Tried Joint Aid and now Canine Inflamex as supplement.
