I was visiting my elderly Aunt today and came out to find a baby crying in the back seat of a car in full sunlight , beside where mine was parked. I dialled 999 and they advised me to smash the front seat window and they would get there ASAP. To their credit a police car arrived within a few minutes (before I had had the chance to go back into my Aunt's house to find somethnig to smash it with). They were in the process of taking the baby out of the car when the woman turned up. She was completely distraught, but also started accusing me of being an interfering busybody . I don't know what happened after I left because the police took over from there and I left. But yes the dangers are huge. No dog/or anyone should be left alone in a car in the sun. Maryxx

What a responsibility, being asked to break the window. The woman sounds as though she could have attacked you, had the police not been there or, worse, the glass could have imploded and harmed the baby.

Barbara I think that is a better option than letting the baby die? Any one with any sense would break a window farthest away from the child - wouldn't they?
Well done Mary.

Yes indeed Mary, well done - I wouldn't have believed that anyone would leave an infant in a car except my hubbie was out walking dogs recently and saw a small child left alone in a car parked on the side of a road outside an a retirement complex - unbelievable! On his return, the car had gone. Another time we went to a pub and took our two into the bar, where we sat down and had a meal. Another car in the car park left two dogs inside with the windows open half way. It wasn't a hot day but poor dogs. I can't understand it because there were lots of places to sit outside. I'm not sure I understand some people and the chances they take but certainly dogs left in hot cars, there's no excuse. Jo x

Just come back from the supermarket, it's hot here today with very little breeze, my car was boiling when I got in.
I was walking away from the shop with my trolley and spotted, you guessed it, a dog in a car, in full sun, the windows were open barely an inch.
Furious and wanting to do something straight away I noticed a manager nearby and alerted her, she rang customer services to put a call out for the owner to return to their car. Another shopper then came up to us and said she had already been and asked for a call out to be made and the owner hadn't responded. The minutes were ticking by, the dog was a black lab, barking and not happy at all, we were both getting more agitated about this poor dog. The shop manager then said there was nothing else they could do other than call for the owner of the car to come forward. The other shopper and I both said well we bloody can and were on the verge of calling the police when this chap arrived and walked calmly to the car.
We both approached the owner who immediately said "I've only been gone about 10 minutes". The reply he got is not all entirely printable, lets just say we left him looking very sheepish after reading him the riot act. I hope he has learned never to do it again.

OMG at the baby thing... seriously! Heck I had to go out to pick hubby up from work the other day and I was utterly terrified having Erin in the car in that heat - had all the windows down, front sunroof open (for my new car is posh and has two!) and I'd have had the aircon on but for the fact the loose wire's broken on it again!
