Dress like Wurzel Gummidge and talk and laugh loudly and hysterically to yourself? Might make owners move away from you but I suppose it wouldn't affect the dogs - hmm, might even attract them Seriously, lots of sympathy but no answers. I do try and explain politely to other owners why it would be helpful to keep their dogs under control and away from mine, some get it while others clearly don't. I often say that I wouldn't like their little dog to have a heart attack when faced by my 4 bigger ones ;D

Agree with all the above comments and try to mind my off lead manners Luckily I DO respect on lead dogs - I called Sonia over and put her back on lead today when I saw a couple come onto the park walking a dog on lead as it was one we didn't know. Later on the walk they caught up with me and i asked if the dogs could meet.....as you do. This gorgeous dog 'doesn't meet other dogs any more - after being attacked by off-lead dogs a few times' [judging by the scarrings quite badly] Just as well some of the 'usual suspects' weren't around on the park at the time- with their 'oh he's friendly' attititude. This owner was really lovely but said it upset her that her dog didn't feel up to meeting others as he used to be so sociable. She still took a moment to fuss my two [well they mugged her while she was chatting] - her OH had their dog about 8 ft away and the dog was perfectly comfortable at this distance. It's the first time I've encountered this and I thought it was a lovely happy dog - and I was glad he was totally unstressed by mine, but what a shame he felt unsafe around other dogs now. I know it doesn't help but I thought of you all today when you are faced with offleaders and yours become stressed . My worst nightmare is a chi-poo-shit -cross puppy being 'walked' off lead in the park by an 8 year old high pitched squeally child yelling 'Come on Rosie' with absolutely no control while the fluffy pocket lunch runs madly around - it terrifies me - one day, when my attention is diverted.... *shudders*

Not off leash dogs- but 1 of my nightmares has come true.Chris out with Kizzie + Perry - and met my BIG boss with his 2 terriers.Have already explained that it's not a good idea for them to meet as Kiz was attacked by a JRT and now hates them. All on lead but apparently Kiz just lunged for the terriers - no damage done.Really don't want to see him next week when I'm back at work (not that I don't anyway). On the bright side - if my dog has tried to eat his, is this gross misconduct and he will instantly sack me?please, please,PLEASE.Cath

Oh Cath - that's real desperation , hoping that Kiz will eat your manager's dog to get you early retirement !!! If you don't count the month we're in and the month you retire only 6 months to go
As for off leash dogs - I try to walk at the same time every day and therefore tend to meet the same people . Over time they have learnt that Jet is unhappy with full on greetings, but is very friendly if approached calmly and this has made things easier . There are always people who let their dogs charge up to him , to whom I say very loudly and firmly " Please call your dog off " , this often has the desired effect , but if I get the answer " oh my dog's very friendly " my answer is " well mine isn't " : a little unfair on my lovely Jet , but it usually works. Of course none of the above works for the ones who are walking along talking /texting on their mobiles and taking no notice of their dog whatsoever !!

I just DON'T get this - it makes my blood boil when I see it - just like talking on the mobile while yr toddler is running riot. It's really NOT walking the dog -in any way shape or form. I admit I will pick up a call when I'm out but only to say -that I'm walking the dogs and will get back to them

My son and I have just witnessed an upsetting incident in the park : an off lead Wiszla pup ran straight into the path of a small girl on her bike causing her to take a nasty fall straight over the handlebars. The little girl was wailing and the puppy owner was saying to the dog " now see what your silly behaviour has done "

Something Jim Greenwood suggested which worked for someone I know with a grey who's worried by off lead dogs ... as the off lead dog approaches (and won't/can't be called back by its owner) you hold your dog behind you and you lunge forward and shout very loudly NO ...
Just an idea .. now where was that taser order form LOL

Hi, some great ideas for me to try - thanks so much - but its good to hear (albeit very sad) that this is a common problem. i must'nt loose heart and forget of how well B has done in the last 5 months since we got her...and not to forget the HUGE learning curve for us. She is such a lovely poppit...feisty at times but such a cutie. Love the poster. Will keep working at it. Thanks everyone.

I usually loudly and fake-chirpily (while gritting my teeth and contemplating murder) talk to the dog... "Where's your human? I wouldn't say hello to her - she's a bit grumpy and will tell you off" - it seems to defuse the situation (and make the point) somewhat more than addressing the idiot owner.
HATE Jack Russells around here though - they're like ALL owned by insane dotty drips who think because they're only little they don't need to be trained or controlled at all.
