Can anyone shed any light on my Betty's skin issues...started out sore, dry, flaky and now she has large areas of skin that was pink, that has turned black!! Particularly the back of her thighs, just in front of her ears. She is around 2yrs old, whippet x saluki and is not showing any signs of improvement on the restricted diet. Any ideas or similar experience anyone? Thankfully it does not appear to be 'worrying' her at all....just her mum & dad!!!

Has she spent much time in the sun recently? their skin does often change colour in summer especially if they are pale skinned. My cream lurchers tummy used to change from pale pink/cream to lots of dark spots in summer then back to pink again in winter.
It can also happen if the skin feels under attack as in mange.

When I had my Monty, as 5 month, he developed a bare pink area on his flank and on ears tips, within a week. The flank area spread quite quickly and turned black. The lady I had him from gave him Malaseb baths and the vet couldn't find a cause, after getting a negative for mites, so gave steroids, which cleared it up, until they were stopped.
However, a lady who went to this vet had the same problem with her terrier/whippet puppy and went to a another one. They were astounded that such a young dog was given steroids and treated her for mites. I asked that Monty be treated for mites, despite the negative, and he cleared up straight away.

Is she insured? If so it might be worth asking about a referral to a skin specialist if it's been going on a while and you're not happy, but I gather that's a pretty expensive route

Jane what do you mean by leaking? Its totally normal for the hounds especially the saluki x's skin to turn black in the summer and get black spots two of mine go from pink to purple all over their underside. Will give you a ring the next couple of days and can you get to the kennels Sunday for me to have a look x

Dilly has loads of black patches on het tummy and chest once the spring comes. Also she is white with brindle patches but she get little spots of brown hair everywhere in the spring.I didn't realise it was a Saluki thing though. They are definitely weird dogs , but very beautiful.

My mum's saluki x is about 7 or 8 now and when she was younger, her skin was pink, but now it is really dark and in some places is black. As she is completely white, we joke that she is really a polar bear.

Hi Lisa, leaking wee...tiny amounts...but licking a lot and not sure if its an infection or not. re her skin, Parry not worried and says that could be the sun or linked to her skin problem. i should be able to get to the kennels Sunday...i would welcome your input.

As you say could be an infection, have you had a sample tested? If not it could be spay incontinence which is easily treated with incurin tablets or drops which she may need for life but control it very well. Our Trixie had it for years and now Maddie has too but it really is manageable. I believe it's as a result of hormonal changes after spaying.

We are waiting on urine test, hopefully back by tomorrow so we will know what we are dealing with. we so adore Betty and its hard when she isnt quite right and we dont know what to do for the best. although she seems so on top it must be a bit of a downer for her. Apart from truely hating the rain she is a lively .... squeaky ball obsessed happy girl. She is very settled now and is doing very well with training. we just love her to bits.

Update: panic over...started agility with Betty this week and met Lulu.. a cute whippet, but, with the same dark skin and patchy hair on the back of her back legs...so now convinced that ok. Shampoos do seem to1 be making a difference and Betty now on 30 days HRT - which again has worked. Phew.
