Hi, Just wondering whether anybody has experience of 'Pannus' affecting the eyes? I've just taken Beanie to the vet, with some clouding visible in both eyes, and they think it is most likely Pannus. Any advice/info greatly appreciated Thank u!

Sorry - just seen this thread. Erin (our 4 year old greyhound) was diagnosed with pannus at Christmas time, and is still being monitored by an eye specialist vet. Initially she had the same symptoms as you describe Beanie as having, plus she was rubbing her eyes as they were irritating her. She is currently on Optimmune ointment three times a day (this is lifelong) and we've been advised that she needs to avoid exposure to the sun (particularly when it is at its strongest - April to October) as this can exacerbate the pannus developing across the eyes. We've looked at getting her Doggles, but the small size are just too small, and the medium too big, as she has a tiny pointy face. We're looking into getting her a dog baseball cap to shade her eyes when walking instead. Since starting on the optimmune the clouding over her eyes has cleared a lot, and she is a lot less irritated by them. She also now keeps her eyes open a lot more, whereas previously she was closing them most of the time. You're welcome to pm us, and we're happy to exchange phone numbers if you want a gab

My dog Blue has Pannus and I would be glad of any advice anyone can give me. He is 6 years old blue greyhound. We adopted him from Fife Greyhound Rescue in September and in the short time we have had him, the lad has had almost all his teeth removed, due to tooth decay and gum disease. We thought we had sorted out his heath issues and now this has happened to him. Blue is a smashing dog, wonderful with our 2 little dogs. We just love him so much and would like to preserve his sight for as long as possible. His current medication is Optimmune eye ointment and Maxitrol eye drops, he previously was being given ExOcin eye drops, but they were stopped on Friday. Any advice would greatly appreciated. Catherine

Catherine Hi Catherine. Erin has been on Optimmune for her pannus for 15 months now, and the plaques on both eyes have retracted right back now, meaning she only needs specialist monitoring every 6 months. Her eyesight has fortunately not been affected at all to date, and the specialist is more than happy that the Optimmune is keeping the condition stable and her eyesight intact She is such a good girl, and has her ointment twice daily. We order it through Vet UK (via the Gap forum, so Gap gets the benefit). We go to the eye vet in Frodsham - they have been fabulous with her. I'm sure Blue will also be fine on the Optimmune - sending him big 's Jan x

Hi Jan, I am so glad Erin is doing so well. Since Blue had his medication changed the plaque on his eye has retracted and is looking so much better. I hope he does as well as your girl. We had never heard of this condition and we were devastated when our vet told us he could loose his sight. This would not matter to us but would be a major adjustment for Blue. He is a big gentle loving dog and we only want to safeguard his sight. It is very reassuring to hear that Erin's sight hasn't been affected. Thanks for taking the time to tell me about your girl. Regards Catherine

Hi Jan, Blue has been back to the vet's for a check up & he is very pleased with him. His eyes have continued to improve, so he doesn't have to go back for 2 months, unless there is a problem. We are so relieved. What was so weirded about this visit to the vet's was that the dog with the appointment before us was another blue greyhound from Greyhound Rescue Fife & it also has Panus! I wonder what the odds are on that happening. Is Panis more common in blue greyhounds, rather like white dogs being prone to deafness? Anyway I am so glad my boy is doing well. I think the idea of a support group is a great!!! I had never heard of this eye condition before Blue developed this disease. It seems so strange for a dog to get a problem that is UV light related here, now if they had said it was rain, I would have believed it. I was recommended not to walk him between 10 & 2 on sunny days or let him sunbathe in the garden. So if there are any tips you can give me I would be most grateful. Regards, Catherine

Regards, Catherine That's great news Erin doesn't go back to the vet now til Sept as her eyes are stable and the plaques fully receeded at the moment Regarding when (if) it's sunny, we tend not to walk our hounds during the day when it's warm / hot as they struggle in the heat anyway - they have their walk in the evening, when it's cooler / the sun is weaker. I also have some hound baseball caps which Erin can wear to shade her eyes if she needs to - particularly as she does like lying in the sun in the back garden. I just make sure her eyes are shaded At a St Georges day street collection As for blue greyhounds, there is some literature saying the condition is thought to be hereditary, so it may be interesting to look back at those dogs family trees. We have a blue greyhound (Baloo) who has never shown any symptoms..........

Hi Jan, It is great to hear that Erin's eyes have stabilised. It reassure us that this condition can be controlled. Our vet did say that it is hereditary but it is difficult for individual owners to discover if there is a history of Panus in the line (especially as it doesn't develop until about the age of 5). Glad to hear Baloo hasn't shown any symptoms. Would it be too impertinent to ask where you bought the eye shade for Erin? If I could get one for Blue he could come out in the garden with us. We don't walk the dogs when it's hot, but that does not happen very often. But we do tend to have a few BBQs which the little darlings love & I would hate to leave Blue in the house. Regards, Catherine

Regards, Catherine We got Erins caps from pressiesfordogs.co.uk They aren't so good in the wind, as the wind catches under the peak of the cap, but on a still, sunny day they are fab We got a lucky dip 3 for £10 Post some pics, if you get some for Blue
