Me again sorry! Hopefully the last of my 'issues.' Paddy scratches furrows in the carpet from time to time. Three places mainly, by the fire, the patio door when he's sunbathing and the aforementioned previously debated 'chewed table.' The furrows are all in the same direction and quite deep. As previously mentioned, he gets loads of exercise, access to the garden and company. Any ideas?

I would say he is trying to make a nest, what sort of bed does he have? They like to have duvets so they can dig them up into a big nest, you could try using a duvet & putting it in one of the areas that he scratches, then if he tries to scratch anywhere else direct him to his duvet?

Teddy is a cavalier , but he digs (front or back paws) when ever he comes in from the garden, having performed, so I assume it's an extension of the digging of scent outside. He doesn't actually damage the rug.

I agree with Wanda, our old boy used to try and rearrange the fitted carpet He once tried to bury a bone under it ;D I'd definitely try putting duvets where he does it and see if he's satisfied with rearranging those instead

Thanks, what a relief - duvets being rearranged instead of carpet now, problem solved

Sam used to dig everything up carpets, rugs, cushions, pillows, leather settee, duvet covers etc etc. He wasnt happy till he tore them either. I have just sewn up the hole in my £50 quilt cover that wasnt 12 months old because Nell keeps getting her paw caught in it. Still he could rip and dig anything he wanted if we could have him back

Aaaw - sounds like Sam was a real character, much missed I'm sure. Paddy is an absolute monkey (table chewing, carpet scratching) but we love him dearly and enjoy him in our lives. Kindred spirits Jx
