All my dogs seem to be suffering with dandruff at the moment and particularily Ruby the lurcher and I'm assuming that it's because of the weather and the central heating. They all have pilchards and are on James Wellbeloved. Is there anything that I can add to improve their skin without upsetting their tummies? I'm assuming that it will be some kind of oil, cod liver and the like, but which is the best kind? I've heard that evening primrose is good does anyone have any experience of this or is good old cod liver oil equally as good. Just one more thing ;D how much do I give them? They vary in size/weight Ruby 25K, Zak 11k and Bonnie 15k.
Thanks ;D

If they are wearing coats at the moment, it is even worse as it makes the scurf come to the surface - Min and Matilda are the same

Kiwi was suffering when we got him but that is clearing up by it self. Rosie on the other hand suffers bad with it and it does not seem to get any better with pilcards etc, thinking it could be something else the vet will need to check it out

Zeb has evening primrose and cod liver oil. A friends dog had the same, when i said about evening primrose oil. she tried it and her dogs are a lot better. all you can do is give it a try and see what happens.

It must be the central heating - our two are the same.
We always add Mazola corn oil to their food (just a tiny bit) when this happens - it really helped Barney's coat after he arrived here last year as a scaly wreck.

Are there any reasons why I shouldn't give them sardines in sunflower oil to help with their coats as well?

Mine are the same and wearing their coats seem to be worse than the central heating for giving them dandruff.

Are there any reasons why I shouldn't give them sardines in sunflower oil to help with their coats as well? I can't see why not as long as you don't overload them in 1 meal/day or you might regret it I've been making sardine and tuna cake with them in oil and I add peanut butter so its an oily treat and a bit of grated carrot, they love it.

As requested, sorry for delay
Fishy treats 1 oblong tin sardines in oil 1 oblong tin sardines in tom sauce 1 tin tuna in oil, or drain brine off well and add a tbs oil 2-4 beaten eggs (handy to use them up) 1 tbs peanut butter 2-3 grated or finely chopped carrots - cooked (microwave them ) 250g wholemeal flour
Mix everything except flour, can use liquidiser, stick blender or potato masher, add flour, if too stiff add another egg, water or oil, too sloppy, a bit more flour. should be like a stiff cake mix divide between 2 8 " cake tins, square if poss or a baking tray with 1" high sides. bake 25-30 mins, cool and cut into small squares.
This is high fat so ideal for active dogs who are not overweight or have problems digesting fat, or pancreatitis.
Very good for hiding tablets as it's soft to push them in and smells fishy It makes a lot so I freeze in small portions. Store in fridge once defrosted
