Maddy has been here as foster for 3 wks and been very sweet. Sun night they all had a pigs ear, Maddy growled at Trix and took hers off her. I said no and went to take it off Maddy who replied with growls and bared teeth I hung on as did she, snarling and growling. Tony put her lead on, I eventually got chew and she was put outside to cool off for a few mins. She came back in, all was fine (shifted all chews and toys).
Last night I'd not closed cupboard properly, she went in and got another pigs ear, jumped on settee. Tony said no and went to take it off her, same thing, lips peeled back further than I thought possible, snarls and growls. He held on, grabbed her collar in other hand as had she dropped chew I think she'd have had a chunk out of his arm. I got the others out of the way so there was no aggro between her and them and he got her outside, she dropped chew on the way.
Again she came in calm and quite subdued and has been on best behaviour ever since, needless to say toys and chews are now locked away.
I know it was my fault, she shouldn't have been able to help herself and having done so I can see that she thought it was her chew but when we've had this in a minor way with the others in the early days they all backed down in a few seconds.
I separate them for feeding but she has been fine up to this point although a bit grabby if given the opportunity. She is a pain about going where she is told and I was wondering whether there was some dominance coming thru rather than thickness as she seems to learn pretty quickly if she wants.
I am ignoring them all, and strangely the others are ignoring her and she looks a bit dejected.
So, did we do right? what else could/should we have done?
I have taken food/chews off her occasionally as I do with the others and she has been fine up to sun. Am I right in thinking we need to be strict with the NILIF and that she is chancing her luck now she feels a bit more settled? As she is I don't think she's safe to be homed with kids so would like to work on this if possible.
I know it sounds a bit frenzied but we stayed calm and neither of us were intimidated and spoke firmly with her - not that it worked!
Thanks, Vicky
