Can anyone recommend any good dog treats that don't have colouring and horrible things in them?

Have you tried making your own? I do liver cake, tuna and sardine and my latest invention, Prawn cake. Its quick, easy and so cheap, freezes well

I make my own too - my dogs particularly love pilchard brownies.
Found some really good deli treats yesterday as well - red fish curls and salmon skins.
Tripe sticks are good, the ones I get don't have anything yucky in them.

Rachel who is Cruiser on here joined us for a walk and had some lovely homemade treats, Bertie does not eat treats when out on a walk but he ate these. I made some the other day and they've gone down a storm. You need to buy the Prize Choice blocks of raw meat (Pets at Home), you can get rabbit, chicken, chicken and liver, beef, tripe, tripe and beef and there may be a few more that I can't think of right now. I mixed one block of meat with a few handfuls of porridge oats, a beaten egg, a couple tablespoons of flour, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, some garlic and cooked it in the oven for 20-25 minutes at 180c. Cheap, easy and they love it! Bertie even comes up to me on walks for a treat or two which is unheard of! Basically you can put any dry ingredients in it and then add any oil you have, olive or cod liver oil or whatever, maybe an egg to bind it all and cook it.

I tend to make my own too, also look in the sell-off for chicken slices which I can cut up and freeze.
Nettie that sounds like a good one - I shall be trying that soon!

Thanks for all the great recipes - Bob is on a fish and potato exclusion diet (for his skin) at the moment - can you suggest anything I could bind fish and potato together with to make a treat that doesn't include grains of any type - I'm not a very good cook - so I need explicit instructions!!!!!

Can he have eggs?, Or I use small tin of sardines in tomato sauce with my prawn ones as they need something to hold it together and I put a spoon of peanut butter in my last liver cake and that's gone down a treat. Any use? Vicky

Thanks everyone Yes, Jane spread the mixture quite on a baking tray, so its about a centimeter thick, cook at 180c for about 20 mins. Take it out of the oven, let it cool and then cut into treat size pieces. I hasten to add I have never tried this with fish and potato but can't see why it won't work.

It might take a bit more cooking as potato has a high level of water naturally and I'm not sure how firm it will go, may just end up as fishcakes or maybe a longer slower cooking will dry it out. Do let us know how it goes, fancy an experiment myself when I've got time. I know you can make potato pastry, might have a look in my cookbooks to see if it has flour added too. What about trying potato wedges, could shake them in flavoured oil in a plastic bag, add anything you can think of to flavour crushed garlic, tomato sauce, sprinkle of low salt stock cube (think granules have grains in ), give a long bake to crisp them up. Ours love potato wedges when we have them. Might try that myself for them. Could try dried out sweet potato chunks. We used to get some from pet shop with a small piece of bacon wrapped round, been well slow cooked to dry it out.
