Roland was walking Archie today, and got talking to a whippet-owner. This guy mentioned he'd had a letter from his vet, telling him there's kennel cough going around at the moment, and the vet is recommending innoculations against it at £49 a pop.
Is this something we should consider for Archie, or is it perhaps the sign of a vet who's cashing in a bit on people's concerns? We are going to ring our vet tomorrow to see what he suggests, but I'd be grateful for others' opinions, too. Thank you!

All my dogs are KC vaccinated. It is a requirement of most boarding kennels etc and gives extra piece of mind. As for the price, my vet charges £15 per dog £49 is extortionate

We KC all Gap dogs at a cost of £10 there is no way on Gods Green Earth I would pay £49 it only lasts for 6mnths. Speak with another vet. I know our vets are offering it to clients at the moment with routine booster or first set vacs for £10

Jee-zus! Thanks Jen and Lisa for the heads-up on the cost - and I nearly didn't bother to mention it in my original post! Hopefully we'll see the whippet-owner again before he takes the dog up to his vet, so we can tell him to shop around.

That's disgusting, what an opportunistic vet, no wonder a lot of people think twice before going when some charge so much. They need to go in room 101 Vicky

Mine are done if they need to be kennelled or if we have a new dog come in, but my vet charges £18 each, and since it only lasts for six months and isn't valid for all strains of kc, that sounds like a complete rip-off to me

on the same topic, if your dogs have had kc should you still vaccinate them or will they be immune?

A vet told me that there are different strains like colds with us. Trix picked it up on hol in Cornwall a few yrs ago and vet said it was going round like wildfire as probably a different strain to the ones the dogs on holiday were used to at home. River didn't pick it up. I've only bothered with vaccination when we kennelled her but as I'll never kennel them these days they don't get it. My vet said it's not always effective against every type so unless you are using kennels they don't advise you bother. vicky

OK... erm... *Blush*... So when Roland told me about this, I was on the train... it was noisy... the line wasn't terribly clear... Turns out it's not £49 - it's £14.99! So I feel like a prat, but at least the vet isn't going around ripping off his customers!
