Non pointy 12 yr old Trixie, currently paying £19 a month, £50 excess, now want £27, £150 excess AND 20% vet fee contribution Lurcher, River, 10 yrs now, £17 & £50 excess, now want £24, £100 excess and 20% vet fees ( and there is 10% off renewal premium now we've got Gracie, otherwise Trixies would be about £30 and Riv's about £27) Neither has had any big claims, just small bits and pieces over the years. That's just ridiculous, means I'd be paying £324 pa to be able to claim £10 off a £200 vet bill for Trixie. It's Pet Pals ins, who have always been great, been with them since Trixie was 6 months, but their underwriters have changed from Domestic and General to QBE ins. I think I'm going to stop insuring them and save the cash but move Gracie elsewhere when her renewal is due as the 20% vet payment is on all dogs over 12 mths. I just need some reassurance that I'm doing the right thing. I doubt I'd ever end up claiming at that, our vets are very cheap and often don't charge if they don't need meds, but I think daft young minx Gracie (2&3/4 yrs) needs cover in case she has an accident looning about. What do you think please? I could max out the credit card for a couple of grand in an emergency. A very gobsmacked Vicky

Sounds like you are doing the right thing. We recently renewed two of ours and changed from PetPlan to Tesco as we found them much more reasonable for exactly the same type of cover.

I would only recommending not insuring a dog if someone could afford to pay from their own means, not only for one off expensive treatment, but also for ongoing chronic costs, particularly for older dogs. hi vicky, i have had the same problem, my pet insurance for my greyhound ellie has gone up from £10 87 to £22. 54!! and the excess has gone up from £50.00 to £60.00. ellie is 5 yrears old & in good health and i have never made a claim. I still would like her to be insured, for peace of mind, i am going to shop around, i will probably go on a site that compares insurance, although my daughter uses more than and only pays just over £8.00 a month for her border collie, so i might look at them. I have thought about doing what you are thinking of doing, putting the money away in a seperate account, but worry that if ellie is ever seriously ill or has an accident there wont be enough to cover it. I feel the insurance companies are just cashing in on responsible pet owners, doesn't seem fair does it. hope you sort out something better. best wishes. gill

I used to insure with Pet Plan but decided they were too expensive. Over the years I have tried several cheaper companies but have finally gone back to Pet Plan, despite the enormous cost of insuring 3 dogs, because they pay out on claims and pay out reasonably quickly - every other company I tried I had problems with - unfortunately I think you get what you pay for. However I am open to suggestions!

As our new arrival is imminent I have been checking out all the insurance companies. They seem to sting you on the 'life time cover' part; which more often than not doesn't actually mean life time. I'm, going with www.animalfriends.org.uk as after reading the small print I have concluded that life time cover does in this case seem to mean just that. they are also an ethical company so that attracted me too. have a look and let me know what you think.

Check very VERY VERY carefully who is underwriting their policies - it used to be E&L and they had to get a high court injuction against them! I don't know whether they have changed over yet, as there was a time period before they could start using another firm In addition, just do a search for E&L (Equine and Livestock) as they are notorious non payers You really don't want anything to do with them

I've moved to AXA, did it online, they seem ok, others on here have recommended them. I did ring up to check the lifetime cover thing and they confirmed that they will cover conditions for the life of the animal, although obviously exclude pre existing conditions. I looked at Animal friends but they want a 20% vet bill contribution as well as the £50 excess, might just be on older dogs but I prefer to just pay excess so ruled them out. Vicky

i checked out more than after somebody recommended them and the premiums are less than 1/2 what we are paying with petplan. e.g. lucys was £9 something instead of £23!! excess was £70 not £60 but still lifetime cover. am thinking hard but petplan have been very very good at paying up and have paid the vets direct too.

We started off many years ago with More Than, who then sold it to Pet Pals who were great but are now part of Pet Protect who are the ones who are now underwritten by this new European insurer who is being so ridiculous with our cover. Just cancelled Gracie's cover with them so now all 3 are with Axa, just hope they turn out ok. They've even covered Trix and River aged 11 and 12, and with Gracie aged 3 its £55 a month. Obviously their premiums are quite a bit higher than hers due to their age, but I am impressed that they do cover new over 8's. Time will tell! It's a minefield isn't it Vicky Pet Pals are now hemorrhaging customers! Beccy, our vet said they're having a lot of problems with Pet Plan trying to wriggle out of paying since they were taken over recently
