I've been reading about heatstroke and how quickly a hound can suffer from it, and it's set me to worrying!
Should I not take Barney on the walk to school at 3pm, on a summer day is that likely to be too much fro him? It's 10 minutes each way usually with 5 or 10 minutes hanging around at the school gate so potentially 30 mins in the sun.
Also - camping is worrying me now. There won't be anywhere for him to shade if it is hot - inside the tent gets boiling in the day even when it isn't that massively hot! And obviously if he's outside then he's pretty much in the sun!
But I know people do take their dogs camping so how do they keep them safe??
Obviously if this summer is like last year there's no problem!!

greyhoundgap.proboards35.com/index.cgi?board=chat&action=display&thread=34384www.puddlepetcare.co.uk/acatalog/Dog_Cooling_Products.htmlHi, when it was hot earlier this year a lot of us, including me bought the mats and bandannas and they are great. If you mention Gap when you order they were giving a donation for each one bought as following Lisa's post they were inundated with orders They've got 10%off today too. I use the human bandanna on Gracie when we go for walks when it's warm and it really makes a difference, she pants much less. I found the mat confusing at first (being a bit thick ) as obviously it's dripping wet after you soak it, but let it dry and its fine and really stays cool for days. I've laid it over Gracie when its really warm as she's a very warm dog anyway. We don't have air con in the car so will be using this when we go to Cornwall in 3 wks time I have to confess to leaning on it when I was sat in the sun and can vouch for its effectiveness Alternatively soak a towel in cold water and drape it over their head/neck/back and that helps too. Can't take credit for any of this, all stuff I've learnt from members of this great community ;D Think I'd probably not take mine to school on a hot day and if I had too would invest in the cooldanas and take water with me. Along with other Gappers we put a paddling pool out when its very hot, Gracie cools her feet in it but the other 2 wont unless they are assisted. She loves to fish rubber toys out of it. Hope you all enjoy your holiday Vicky
