Seamus (my grey) came to us joining my family which includes 2 elderly BLIND AND DEAF dachshunds.(14 years old) Seamus by the way is doing brilliantly after being with us 3 and half months now!! Im in a dilemma and thought I would ask your opinions as we all have one thing in common - we have dogs! One of my dax ( ROCKY) has a loud heart murmur but is not on drugs as yet as he is coping ok so far, no coughing etc. My other ( BRUNO) on Sunday after picking up from kennels as seemed to have had a small stroke . He is eating and doing his business in the gardenbut I have too put him in the garden and put him back in his basket as he just walks round and round in circles and doesnt seem to know where he is. Im scared about taking him to the vet as 1. He might pump him full of drugs which at his age I dont want ( had a previous dax that that happen d too and it killed him)or 2. He may suggest hes put to sleep. If he is put to sleep do I put my other dax to sleep too as thay have never been apart since they were born (litter mates)? Sorry if this upsets anyone but I think im going to have to face the inevitable sooner than later Very upset Netty

Personally I would take him to the vets. At the moment from what you've said he is very confused and this could stress him out. It's no quality of life for him not to be able to get around as he normally does. Although it sounds like it could be a stroke, it might not be. It could be an infection causing this which could easily be sorted with ABs.
I know you have had a bad experience in the past with medication but you can't go on like this.
If the vets do suggest PTS, I wouldn't assume your other dax couldn't go on. Dogs are very adaptable and you do have another dog in the house for companionship for your other Dax as well.

First things first, get him to the vet to find out what is going on, just because you've had one bad experience doesn't mean you'll have another one. Once you've seen the vet you will know what the prognosis is and can then make a decision where to go from there. If the worst does come to the worst I don't think there is any reason to have his littermate pts, I really think you need to play this by ear but for starters get a diagnosis/prognosis from your vet.

Don't panic. The others have given you some very good advice. Get the little fella down to the vets to see if he has something that can be treated and deal with that first, and with regard to the other little man I would say that if the worst happened that he would cope just fine, dogs are much more resilient than us pathetic humans. He does after all still have company in the form of Seamus. Be brave

Awww id get him checked up asap, he's obviously not happy at the moment and they know if you are worried which wont help!! We had to have our 13yo lurcher put to sleep a few months back and our collie x has allways had her for company, we were really worried about how she would be react being on her own, but apart from wanting extra cuddles and not liking being left she has got on fine, they can adapt well and at least your other dax will have seamus to keep him company
