Tabitha, our 7 year old greyhound, has had very runny stools for 4 days now. She did a huge stool that had like a membrane around it (mucus?) on Monday and since then nothing solid at all. I'm wondering if it is because of the heat or diet-related. The dogs were on Supadog Sensitive and I tried Chappie but the stools had been better on the Supadog so went back to that but have changed gradually and other dogs (lurchers) are OK. She was panting on Monday and for a couple of days she slopped water all over the floor when having a drink so I was worried she might have been out in the garden too long when it was hot. She seems a bit lethargic but otherwise normal - am I worrying unnecessarily or should I take her to the vet? Anyone had a similar experience?

It could well be the sudden heat but after 4 days I personally would take Tabitha to the vet just to get things checked out especially as you say is lethargic but even that might be due to the weather better to be safe than sorry

I wouldn't risk waiting any longer, as well as having some sort of tummy bug, she may be dehydrated if she's had diarrhoea for days, I'd take her to the vets ASAP. Hope the vet manages to sort her out.

It sounds very much like colitis which means her bowel is inflamed and she needs anti inflamatories at least and possibly antibiotics too. Ask for a vet appointment asap as she will as has been said be becoming dehydrated too.

Thanks for the advice - OH took her to the vet yesterday and came back with antibiotics and some probiotic gunge. Vet thinks it's probably the change in diet. I starved her for 24 hrs then gave her yoghurt and weetabix last night, porridge and scrambled egg this morning - result! A fairly normal looking output at last!!! Hopefully I just need to wean her back onto the dog food now.
