Hi!
Right =] We've had Brontë since Friday afternoon/ evening and she seems to be settling in great. She's a 6 year old brindle and white Greyhound who raced up until 2005 and then was rehomed with someone. We don't know for how long or why she ended up being taken back by GRWE but when she came in she was in a pretty sorry state. She had fleas and bad teeth and had to have six teeth taken out. Everything so far has been great with her and she's a little angel!
We have a few concerns though which we would be grateful for some help with -
Firstly, she's very lazy! We know Greyhounds are couch potatoes of the dog world and all, but should she be this bad? She literally is asleep all day. Our house is very busy and she gets woken a lot but almost instantly falls back asleep. We know she's probably used to being a bit less of a busy environment to sleep in so we have made a room available for just her so that she has somewhere quiet to go but she just isn't interested. Whenever she is in the house she is lay down, on her side fast asleep! This isn't a problem [actually it's good for us] but we're worried something might be wrong with her. Is there a possibility it could be something to do with her teeth? She had 6 of them out of Thursday and obviously her mouth is still very sore but she's on the best soft food available and what was recommended by the kennels that we got her from. When we take her out for a walk she's fine but when we go to the enclosed field and let her go she catches the ball a few times and wonders around but then goes and sits by the gate waiting to go. She just won't budge!
The second thing is that my parents both work full time and i'm at school all day. Originally the plan was that one of them would come home at lunchtime and let her out for the toilet but unfortunately this isn't really possible anymore. We are also worried this would upset her more as they would only be in the house for ten minutes before she would have to be left again. The plan now is that we buy a shed for her to live in during the day. This would mean she would have access to our huge garden all day as well as a comfortable bed in the shed where she is out of the rain/wind/sun. I'm worried that she won't like it but she's used to living in a kennel outside so do you think she will be ok? She would be left from 8:15 am until 3:15 pm. As soon as i got home from school i would bring her in and then she would be walked and be in for the rest of the evening. Does anyone else do something like this? Do you think she will be ok? Any ideas to make her happier living in the shed and garden during the day? We are planning to test this out tomorrow to check she isn't really upset by being left in the garden and shed.
Any pointers/tips/advice/ reassurance would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
Ashleigh & Brontë
