Am sure that dogs have to be left in the cars , which put me off when we were thinking of going to the Isle of Man - might be wrong though, as it seems a bit unsafe(people arent allowed to stay in the cars) and stressful for the dogs. Double check though. We've had past experience similar with a car breakdown company. When the company sent a tow vehicle to winch the car up on, my friend was told her Rhodesian Ridgeback had to stay in her car, and was not allowed in the cab with us - when she said she would go in the car with her dog, she was told it was unsafe. As you can imagine, she said if its unsafe for her, its unsafe for her dog - the dog evetually was allowed in the cab with us!! Good luck. Fran & Jan

You can either leave your pet in the car, NO WAYor put it in the ships kennels, and I wondered what they were like. I have travelled to France by ferry with the hounds & left them in the car they were fine & slept soundly the whole time.
There are crew down there that keep an eye on them & will get hold of you if they think there is a problem (we got summonsed because they were worried about Ellie & wondered whether she was OK as she was roaching flat out & I think they thought she was dead).
We use Eurotunnel now because it's more convenient.
I have read that a dog got stolen from a ferry kennels so not sure how secure they are?

I've never had experience of travelling on ferries with dogs but have to say I wouldn't have a problem in leaving my hounds in the car. They love travelling in the car and I think they would feel more relaxed and comfortable in a more familiar environment and as said before they are kept an eye on by the crew. It's not a hugely long journey anyway, you wouldn't be leaving him for a long time.
I would also recommend using rescue remedy to try and calm him before you travel you will probably find he will just sleep for the entire journey.

I think leaving your hound in the car which is a place he is familiar with would be far less stressful than leaving him in the ferry kennels.
We don't have any experience of leaving the dogs in the car on ferries as when we come to France we take the Shuttle, we all stay in the car together.

I haven't travelled a dog by ferry yet, but would be hesistant about making them travel in the car on the vehicle deck because of the number of car alarms that seem to go off, which I expect the dog would find annoying.
The Isle of Man Steampacket allow dogs in a special lounge on the Ben My Chree (IOM - Heysham) but not on the Seacats (Liverpool - IOM). Don't know about the Irish ferries, sorry.
