Tippy keeps licking her bottom or the top of her tail can't work out which now is she just cleaning that area or is there a problem?

Could be the dreaded 'anal glands'!!!! Dogs sometimes lick to express them.

Does her breath have a fishy smell, another symptom of possible blocked anal glands. She might need to have them expressed by your vet. Mine volunteered to show me how to do it for Bertie, I declined the 'kind' offer. Some dogs manufacture too much mucus which can result in blocked/inflamed/infected glands. At the moment I have Bertie on a capsule of slippery elm daily and 'touch wood' he doesn't seem to be having the problems he was having, apparently it helps reduce the amount of mucus. I shall be shouting from the rooftops if this really does prove to help but it might still be a tad too early to tell, if I can get him to 6 months without a visit to the vet for his glands then I'll let everyone know.

Nettie if the slippery elm gets Bertie to 6 mounths with out them doing I'll buy shares in company's that make it as I have to do most of my 5 dogs and it would be a DoG send. Hazel ifyou can stomach it, if indeed the problem is anal glands, it's easy and only requires laxtex gloves and a pot of vassaline. If it worms it would be worth doing Tippy and the pup at the same time so they don't cross infect each other.

Hi, my girl has awful problems with anal glands but tends to scratch her sides rather than lick her bottom. A vet did tell me that some dogs are sensitive and benefit from a bottom wipe after 'going' and to try baby wipes. I did see some dog bottom wipes in P@H at the weekend. The things we do for our dogs eh!

Ted was wormed 5 weeks ago when we got him so we did Tippy at the same time.Just out of interest what do you worm with? I worm with milamax but this is because of the fosters coming in and out, this is really quite strong, I refer to it as belly bleach. Ted is only a pup so i'd stick with panacur. If it was anal glands you might find tippy has relived herself by licking if it's stopped and she hasn't got fishy breath or it was something else ie sticky poop that needed removing. Other possiblies are a small scratch or bite but as she's stopped the problem will have relived it's self. nicky ;D
