Anyone encountered it? I haven't and my (fairly young) vet hasn't - until now. Polly has got it, probably due to stressy low state after losing Humphrey and then being attacked by 3 dogs on the beach She is happier and more confident now, but is motheaten around the muzzle and eyes She has Advocate spot-on which has to be repeated next month, but any comments or experiences are welcome.

I'm pretty sure that Lisa has used Advocate to treat demodectic mange.

Stronghold is also another successful treatment for demodectic mange. A 3 month course (pipette administered monthly) is normally prescribed, but improvements are usually seen before the course is completed.

Lisa really had to press for the advocate treatment which worked over time. The bath stuff that was perscribed first burnt rodenry's already fragile skin. Stick with the Advocate and say NOOO to the bath. Roderny's recovery was slow due to the damage done by the bath, It was what caused his feet to swell and go all nasty. I'm sure Lisa will be along to fill in the gaps. nicky ;D

Thanks people. Vet doesn't like the bath either, tries to avoid using it wherever possible.

Barney had the bath and it was so painful to do it to him, he is of course a younger dog - took over 4mnths of baths to clear him so wouldn't wish that on an older dog.
Hope you find something to help

There is already a faint dark shadow appearing on Polly's bare muzzle. A bit too soon to start going but so far, so good.

Well that's positive, hope it isn't too long before she's all fluffed up again.

Casper who I fostered had demodectic mange & it was treated with Advocate. I found that the redness & itchiness soon cleared up but his skin was still a bit dry & flaky, around 4 weeks later new hair growth started to appear albeit brown & fluffy ;D

Really pleased Casper is with you.
I've tried Advocate and it's done nothing, but my boy's on AB's and before I try horrible aludex I'm trying 'Cortex Dictami' root, has anyone tried this, it's a Chinese medicine?

Thanks for the comment about dry and flaky, cos that's what Polly's muzzle is like, also one of her ear tips. It is rough and I think rather sore.
Any ideas on anything I can use to soothe and moisturise her skin in those places?
Not heard of Cortex Dictami, but interested in alternatives.
We did have a great homeopathic vet in Pembs, but he moved away. I'm thinking of going down that route if I can find one within reasonable distance.

Caspers ear tips were very dry & scabby so I spent a few evenings massaging them with some hand cream that I had. The hand cream was a very natural, homemade one with no artificial ingredients, I bought it from a market stall similar to the type of thing that Lush sells.
Anyway after a couple of nights massaging, the scabby bits started to come off and eventually all was left was nice new skin.
I did try massaging some onto his belly which was also very dry but as he was was licking that off I didn't contine with that, I did give him cod liver oil with his food to help also.

Thanks, I will get hold of some. There is a stall at our local WI market which does stuff like that.
