We have had our rescued ex racer, Barley, for coming up to 2 months now and he has just started shedding what i would call his fluffy soft kennel coat. The problem is it is coming out in big clumps...handfuls even! leaving baldy patches on his thighs and im now starting to worry about it He fully is up to date with all flea, worm and parasite stuff (frontline, drontal etc) and have checked his coat for signs of itchiness, but cant see any...it just looks like he is going through a REALLY bad moult. When we got him they said they thought he was just coming up to 2 yrs old and maybe even a bit younger...so could this be his puppy coat he's losing...or is it just is kennel coat? ...or something else. Im ringing the vets this morning to get him checked...but im really worried about this any advice would be fantastic

I think it is just the kennel/puppy coat and as it is spring he will moult anyway. Do check with your vet but I think in time Barley will have a lovely coat and no bald patches. A good diet will help with oily fish a couple of times a week.
If you have only had Barley for 2 months and your heating has been on he will have been much warmer than he was used to in kennels and this could be another reason he is shedding his coat also because he is now getting good care and food.

Some greyhounds do suffer with balding on there thighs and side's, at this time of year most dogs are going through the moult, and if he's got a kennel coat the moult will be worse, my lurcher suffer's from seasonal alopica, she's just started loosing the hair on her thighs and side's, some dogs suffer with this condition all year round, no one knows why, but it dont seem to do them any harm. thebeastlybeasts.co.uk/content.php?pg=alopecia

I had exactly the same thing with one of my lurchers who came direct from the pound. After a couple of months he was losing hair in clumps and going bald but he was just shedding his "woolly" coat and adapting himself to living in warm house ;D
If you are worried tho' no harm in nipping him to the vets to get some skin scrapes carried out.

Well the vets seem to think its just his kennel coat coming out as the skin is very healthy...he just looks so raggy Its that bad he does actually look like he has a bad skin condition, as his coat was very fluffy, soft and thick and it this that he's losing. Is there anything apart from just using a standard brush that can help get it out quicker?...He also leaves big fawn tufts wherever he lays ;D

Rubber mits go down well, a zoom groom or the good old marigolds out the kitchen cupbaord do a great job too.
