I have just joined the forum. My grey 'Seamus' has been with is for just over 2 months. He is moulting well and i have been told that he is loosing his 'kennel coat' of fluffy hair! I have tried Dermacton but his skin seems to react to it . Any suggestions for a product to use on his skin as it is very dry on his back legs. He is suffering from 'baldy thigh' as well. Being black hes starting to look very unkept !!! He has EPT evry day and sardines every so often too. Annette

Hi, we had exactly the same problem with our rescue greyhound - the vet advised sebocalm which worked really well, after about 3 baths his skin was visibly less dry and flaky. I also posted a thread about it and had some great advice for supplements that can help too Sou

I use Sebocalm on my lot and it did really improve their skin. Drum was very dry and flaky when he first arrived and the vet recommended Sebocalm.

How long will this 'kennel coat' take to come out?? There seems to be mounds of the stuff. Seamus has got very 'big' flakey dandruff too now!! 8-)Ive just started putting on Quistel spray and will be bathing him in it soon.Poor old thing will be bald soon.!!

Alexa was a real scruff when we adopted her over a year ago. She had thick dark brown fur and flakey skin. Well that brown fur came out in tufts all over the house, collecting in clumps under furniture and behind doors. It took about 4 months before her sleek new coat started to slowly show through. The slowest parts to shed and grown new fur were her hind quarters and back. About 6 + months later she was shinny and sleek.
She was black all over with white paws and shirt front with a little silvering on her muzzel. But the funny thing was, her new facial fur had far more silvering around her muzzel, eyes and head. She looked aged!
I was a bit worried about the flakey skin, so I added cod liver oil to her feed daily. Try looking at her diet. Also aloe vera gell - good after grooming. If the area looks sore or thickening, ask the vet to treat with Stronghold just incase he's picked up mange. Easy with to pick up cos of foxes.
I bought a rubber 'kong', which has rubber bristles, and got quite a lot out with it. Some of the rest I plucked out by hand.

It's early days, I wouldn't worry too much, it will settle down in time. Evening Primrose oil is supposed to be good for skin/coat condition, but to be honest any sort of oil will help- even just a teaspoon of olive oil on his food 2-3 times a week.
Dorwest Herbs do a product called 'Keepers Mix' which i've heard very good reports of for skin/coat/general condition, so might be worth a look.

Try not to worry I fostered a black girl and she had the thickest kennel coat, she wasnt with me long before heading to her new home. I met up with her some months later at the gap show and her new owners were worried about all her hair falling out. It was her kennel coat and underneath she was all shiney ;D Be patient and you will be pleasantley suprised ;D Sue

Awh thanks again everyone for your words of wisdom! Ive had Seamus since 1st March and as you have rightly said he is losing a lot of fluffy hair. The shiny coat seems to be appearing slowly!!! I have been giving him his daily omega 3 oils and he has sardines in sunflower oil a couple of times a week which seems to be working! When I had him he had quite sore red bald elbows and bald patches on his tail - he now has fur in these areas! His baldy thighs seem to have gotten a little worse but I can see fur starting to break through the skin now. What a pampered hound is he All that remains is start looking after myself now I think. ....greyhounds dont you just love 'em!!

That is exactly the situation that we're in with Barney.
We've had him since the beginning of April and he's losing grey fluff from his coat like there's no tomorrow! I reckon he too will be bald before very long . . . getting scared of grooming him in case there's nothing left!
He also had very flakey, scurfy skin at first but that has settled down reasonably well. We give him pure corn oil once a day with his tea, which worked wonders years ago with our other dog who was also a prime Head and Shoulders candidate when she arrived.
So if we wait patiently will the mirror-shine coat arrive eventually? What is Sebocalm?

Mine are all going through their spring moult at the moment, and Minstrel is losing his puppy coat as well as kennel coat, so he and Matilda (typical black greyhound) look particularly shabby in patches. If they are on a good diet, it's just a matter of being patient and grooming regularly - it'll come back!
