Well I can't believe that a year on I haven't managed to put anything in this forum. Maybe I am just in denial and he is still a foster!!!
Well it was July 11th 2004 and at the GG show that I had the pleasure picking up my next foster for Greyhound Gap. Now I was quite excited as I had heard he was a lovely red fawn with a darkish muzzle....just what I always wanted. A helpful hint....don't always wish for what you want, cos it may not be what you expected!!!
Here he is after being handed over by Vicky (Veejay) who had taken him straight from his trainer along with Paddy, another Gap dog.
He seemed to behave impeccably throughout the show and had no vices...on to a winner I thought. He did have one really daft quality and that was jumping up for hugs, I don't think many people escaped from his muddy paws.
As we were staying at Lisa's at the time, we all went back there and soon discovered that this greyhound had a voice...a very loud moany one at that. He also seemed to have a bit of an attitude towards Rodney in Lisa's, so when we had to make an emergency trip home due to our other dog having an accident and leave Muppet for a day or two, we did not envy Lisa at all!!
So anyway, the Muppet hound eventually landed in Wales and made his presence known by cocking his leg up on everything and running round like he had a rocket up his bum. Not to mention having an answer for everything and shouting his head off. Oh the joys of fostering!! We soon realised that Muppet (or Magic as he still was then) was no ordinary greyhound. He was very vocal, had a face only a mother could love, he did not do the lazy sleepy thing and bizarrely, had excellent recall from the start. He was almost a tattooed lurcher!!
His real character shone through though and it felt like every week there was another story to tell about what the ginger pleb had been up to. We tried to really push him to be rehomed, but for some reason he really had very little interest and those who did come to meet him...well he soon balls up his chance of going with them.
He got to meet and be fish tested..
Show off his green fingers or shoul I say paws...
Demonstrate his DIY skills..more than once I will add!!
Display a hearty appetite..
...and a caring disposition, particularly with his poorly best mate Alfie ;D
Everyone kept saying he would stay and I am sure they were secretly taking bets, but at the time we had a very poorly greyhound, Alfie, and it was just not appropriate to make a decision. Muppet adored him and to this day I have yet to see him bond with another male dog so well and when we lost Alfie at the end of Ocober 2004, I am certain Muppet grieved as much if not more than any of us. It was after this that we decided that Muppet had become such a part of our lives, that to lose him as well was unthinkable and almost like losing a part of Alfie too.
So the Muppet officially got rehomed.......to us.
Yes he still tests my patients and his antics have not stopped. We have gone through hell and back with him as his behavioural and sometimes medical problems became worse (which I know I may have reinforced unintentionally), but with the help and support of Gap, in particular Lisa who I know has a soft spot for my boy , and other rescues I know I can cope and have the confidence to move forward with him.
He is so so special and recently when he spent a period of time away from the house, I realised how empty my life would be without him.
Even Tallulah his resident sister, has grown to love and like him. That was after she gave him a walloping and made sure he knew who was boss in this house.
So Muppetty despite my threats, you are not going anywhere and you are here to stay. Just please try and be a good little boy. ;D
