hi,
I've been wondering this for a while... How long should we let our hound go without peeing? He rarely asks to go out, but we generally go out for walks at 7am, 10am, 2pm, 6pm, 10pm. Most of these are short trips out to the garden / car park / round the block, with one or two long walks per day, depending on weather / how energetic he's feeling / whether we have to work. He has company most days, and a dog walker on days we can't be there, so is never left alone for very long periods.
However, if it's bad weather, or increasingly, he just can't be bothered, we have to wake him up to go to the bathroom. If we just let him be he happily sleeps in until around 9.30am or even later, and even then doesn't seem desperate to go out, preferring breakfast before a trip outside if we let him. It's becoming an effort to get him out the door for his 10pm pee before bed, and usually involves bribery to get him to move. He drinks a fair amount of water and has some wet food / meat / fish, though his diet is mostly dry food. He always has fresh water available - he probably drinks about a bowl of water a day - and he does pee lots when he's out.
Is it ok to just let him sleep in / have an early night sometimes? Or should we insist on regular pee breaks? On the rare occasions he does need, he does ask - by going to the door or barking once, or by doing something naughty like grabbing the book I'm reading. Tonight we went out a short walk around 8pm at his request and he went straight to bed after - I'm pretty sure if I leave him alone now he will sleep until morning, but it seems a very long time to go without a bathroom visit.
I would hate for him to get problems from holding his pee in too long, but it does sometimes seem mean to wake him in the evenings / morning when he looks so comfy.
What are others thoughts / experiences?
Thanks!!
K
