Hi I collected my first greyhound yesterday she is 5yrs old and so sweet and well behaved. I have 6 cats and she's been really good with them. I also have 4 children which she's also very good with. Anyway though she's very good she's whimping a fair bit every time we leave the room everytime she can hear someone but can't see them just wanted advice how to settle her as, I know it's all new to her but don't like the idea of her being stressed. Many thanks

Hi, welcome and congratulations on your new family member. It sounds as though you have a very busy home!
If you haven't done so already, read this thread:
greyhoundgap.proboards.com/thread/29756/new-hound-home
It's really important to give your new hound time to find her feet. She may well be 'well behaved' now, but she is sussing you all out. You may find some behaviours (not necessarily bad ones) appear after a few weeks or even months.
There's loads of people on here with lots more experience than I who can offer you the benefit of their advice. The rescue you got her from should also offer support to you too.
ETA Just tested the link. Click and hold 'control' and the page will open in a new window.

Welcome to Gap and the wonderful wacky world of greyhounds. I am in the process of settling a new greyhound into my house and would agree with Vanessa that you should read Lisa's thread and follow her advice-it works. Did your hound come straight from kennels-if so, she has a lot of new experiences to deal with and will need time to work things out for herself. She will have had a routine in kennels which will now be completely changed-it's like taking us to a place where we don't know the rules and can't speak the language . Be patient with her and give her the time and space to learn about her new environment. Good luck and keep us updated.

Sorry just to add - I'm not sure if the kennels told you or not. Even though you Grey may be good with the cats right now, please, please never leave them completely shut in a room together I.e the cats need a safe escape route just in case.
We had 2 cats and in the whole time I had them with my cat friendly dogs, if I was out of the house the cats were either shut in our bedroom (with a tray and water just in case) or outside.
Xxx

A lot of greys struggle shut behind a closed door when you're in the house, often using a dog gate is a better choice. The other advantage is a cat can escape the room although it's not unheard of for a hound to leap one if their prey drive is triggered sufficiently.
