Hi ted
poor merlin. Duke is exactly the same. If I know thunder is coming I give him rescue remedy which seems to help. He generally gets himself under the stairs at home and hides. I tend to turn tv's up a notch and put radios on in each room for Duke. Best of luckx

I found the Thundershirt did not help Merlin. The main problem he most likely has inner ear damage from being prodded un the top of his skull with a cattle prod to get him out of the racing gate faster, you can see the burn mark. Even Linda the ttouch founder could not calm Merlin down when we were on a ttouch workshop when we had a Thunder Storm. I do give him lots of ttouches as I do with the other three Hounds.

Your poor boy Our Katy is totally noise phobic (amongst other phobias ) so I totally sympathise, it is awful to see them in such a state Katy has a bolt hole/den under the table. We tried lots of (less drastic) things but have ended up giving her Xanax which is prescribed by the vet, it doesn't totally stop her reaction but it certainly takes the edge off a little. I'm going to look into Melatonin as I've seen other people dealing with anxiety in their dogs recommend this on another forum so that might be worth trying. I really hope you can find something that works for Merlin

Kobi has had Xanax for the last few years for bonfire night, and New Year. I can honestly say that it has been the best thing ever for my poor boy, who used to get into such a state his heartbeat would go into overdrive . None of the traditional, herbal or prescribed drugs helped him at all. After each bonfire night and New Year since he has had Xanax, he is amazingly calmer than the previous year. It does seem to affect the memory process. He now listens to the bangs, worries for a few seconds and then goes back to normal. Something unimaginable a few years ago. I hate having to resort to pharmaceuticals, but I'd rather that than lose my boy to extreme distress causing a fatal event, so I'm glad I put him on it
