Just wondered if anyone has seen, or known anything like this before , as am getting a little worried now. It has been coming on for a good few months now , and, i have had it checked by my vet a few weeks back who couldnt find any real reason why this is happening. Basically he is losing the colour of his fur on his ears which were brown , and, are now quite white, but, i dont feel its his age as he is only nearly 7 , so.............I wondered what others thought .

Sorry no advice on change of colour pigmentation but if your vet has checked him out and can't find anything wrong I would try not to worry (I know easier said than done).
How is he in other ways - still eating, any change in behaviour?

Not that i have noticed Mary, but, he now has a white eyebrow too ....................just very odd isnt it , I.ve never known anything like it , and, i think even my vet was a little surprised , as obviously the first check was could it be cancer through the sun etc, which, thankfully was quickly ruled out. If his behavior does change in anyway , and, if it continues to spread i will have to go back and see Ben, and, see where to go from there. Thanks for replying Mary, I really appreciate it Carol x

Just a thought, but could it be a bit like vitiligo in people where skin colour cells stop functioning giving a bleached look?

That does sound promising , as that is exactly what it does look like, as though whatever gives you colour in your hair, has suddenly stopped working . I will look definitely look that up, cheers for that Carol x

Aha Have a look at July's Your Dog magazine ..there's an article on Page 62 onwards about Hypothyroidism and the case study is about a Flat Coat Retriever who was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and at one point 'the inside of his ears went white, which is not a typical sign of the condition' so definitely worth getting your vet to do bloods and make sure he checks the FreeT4 cos in sighthounds the rest can be OK but the FreeT4 can show they are low.
Hope he's OK

Thanks for that Julie, I have looked it up, and, it could be a thought as, he has put on loads of weight too. I always free feed,as its just easier for me with having 5 , and, to my knowledge he is not eating any more than anyone else, and, all the others are totally fine weight wise. I have just rung my vets and voiced my concerns , and, she is going to speak to Ben , who only saw him a few weeks back , and, see wether he thinks he needs a blood test done .............so, will wait and see what pans out from this today . Again thanks for this advice , as if he has got it , the sooner its diagnosed the better Carol x

Hope you get a diagnosis soon Carol, as the not knowing can be very frustrating and so upsetting. Thank god, I am mightily relieved as you must be, that it is not cancer Maryxx

My vet has rung me back, and , am seeing him on Thursday .He has said that hypothyroidism can be quite common in these type of dogs , so, he will re check him over, and also do bloods , and, we will go from there . I am so so pleased that i have put this thread up, as now at least this can either be confirmed or ruled out , as otherwise i would of plodded on , and if he has got it, then he could get other side effects too with it going un treated, and i, would of had to live with that. At least this way if he hasnt got it, it still would be money well spent to know that our precious little ( big) man is fit and healthy apart from looking like he has been given new ears . Thanks again for all your advice and care, and, will let you know the outcome later this week .

Had a phone call from my vet last night to say that Bryns thyroid, and, free T4 blood test have come back as low, so, he is having to be starved from now till 3 tomorrow ,and, having a full screening which will confirm , or not, the results of the first test If it then backs up the initial test , he will have to be on medication for it, so, as the bloods have to be sent away i presume we wont hear anything till mid next week . As Lisa knows, Bryn " has "put on a tad bit of weight , as the last time she saw him she said he'd ate another dog , so, if this test comes back that he is low, then that could explain his weight gain , if not, then truly Lisa, I will put him on a diet .
