Prince was diagnosed Friday and his cancer is in the knee joint while he was under I asked for the chest xray they were clear when I got him home after the x rays he was in excruciating pain worse than before he went in after spending a horrendous night called the vet who said bring him straight in and will take leg off ,vet assured me the pain post op would be nothing compared to the pain of the cancer and he was right he came home sunday and initially was crying when he got up but once we got his meds going he was fine ,he is now 3 days post op doing brilliantly and most of all pain free compared to what he was ,he is walking normally and is coping really well we don't know how long he will get no one does but he was fit and happy and healthy before this and was in no way ready to give up on life and now he is on the way back to being my funny cheeky boy he was before the op ,Hope you get some quality time with your girl and having just gone through it I would say get it done quickly if that's the way you choose to go xx

Thanks for all the support. I managed to get an appointment at Hall Place vets this morning and she's there now - we'll amputate if possible (subject to position of tumour, conditions of lungs etc). I feel much better because it feels like we're giving her a chance - if we can amputate, we will, but if not at least we've made a decision and she's not still sitting here looking miserable.
It was excellent to have a vet we could talk to - totally agree that it's important to have a vet we can work with.

I'm so pleased that you could get to Hall Place quickly. I do so hope that they can do something for Eva.

Eva has had a successful operation - she's staying at the vets' overnight and hopefully we'll be able to pick her up tomorrow.
I would just say to anybody who is scouring the forum looking for other people's experiences with this disease (as I have been doing!), that it is really important to have a vet you can talk to - awful though it is, maybe ask your vet now what their opinion is on amputation as cancer treatment, because if they do not support it but you would consider it then you need to find a different vet you can talk to if it ever happens to you.

I'm just so glad you got such a brilliant recommendation and so quickly.
There also seem to be a lot of vets who do not have overnight facilities, which makes undertaking an amputation extremely difficult even if the vet in principle is for this kind of treatment.

I have already thought about what I'd do should this happen to one of my hounds as I don't want to let my emotions get in the way. All I can say is that you should make your decision based on what is best for the animal, not what is best for the owner.
Hope all turns out well for you and Eva.
