No matter how much you research(and that's a good thing) the reality can be different and hard. Our 1st Grey had always(as far as we know) been a pet.Our current grey is so different cos he is an ex-racer - can't really explain it but enough people have tried to explain greys to you. They are a breed apart, quircky but love people so much.Still find it hard to beleive that Perry has turned out to be an ace fundraiser = Cath.

I have been busy and haven't had time to update but I wanted to let you know that we have taken some really big steps with Ellarecently! She is slowly but surely coming out of her shell. She is currently sitting on the settee with me comfy and happy! I'm so chuffed. We do have a long way to go but it's a start. I will post pictures soon.

Merry Christmas to everyone! It's definitely been a gradual improvement - every day has been better and it has been really nice having time off over Christmas. She is now following us around like a shadow. Really happy snoozing on the settee with us. Having said that Her naughty side has come out too - she is starting to chew things, socks have gone missing, a very expensive Christmas present! I'm not so happy. Ha. Can't figure out how to post photos yet but I will!

Has she been sick and/or tried to toilet and not 'gone' .. if so that could be a blockage and she needs emergency vet help. To get them used to stairs take two long bath towels, fold them lengthways, put one round her chest and one under her tum by her bak legs then you can safely 'walk' her down stairs, they have never seen stairs usually but once they get the idea they zoom up and down them. Most reactions you/we see from greyhounds are down to fear ... leaping about at other dogs, separation anxiety, whining, panting tho that could be pain related too Hope she's feeling better today but a vet check would be a good idea. Did you change her food gradually? Usually it's recommended that you introduce a different food over 4 or 5 days reducing the old and gradually increasing the new, I find greys are better if the foods less than 20% protein and we've had three dogs recently who were hyper or aggressive on a cheaper greyhound food- change them to Burns and they were absolutely fine so worth thinking about. Cos greys have a deep chest they are prone to Bloat so feed her from a stand (tho the jurys out on this), don't exercise her an hour before or after feeding and either soak your complete food for 20-30mins or add water just before you give it to her. Don't forget that you've taken her from everything she's ever known and loved plus she has lost her grey friends so she will be quiet and withdrawn for a while, walking her with other owners is great. Keep asking questions- we all learned as we went along so we're happy to help Welcome to greyhounds Julie Hiya So pleased for you that Ella is settling - persevere and be patient and you won't look back Jools " the jury's out "on raised feeding - new theories or findings? Im intrigued. Jo

Hi Jo ... There was an experiment done a few years ago which apparently showed that there was no benefit to feeding from a raised stand but personally Ive seen the benefit to my bridge girl of feeding from a,stand and then with creaky oldies so id always use a stand. j xx

Hello, just checking in to say its been about 8 months now and touch wood things are all still going well. her personality has really come out and she has settled down into a fun and sweet dog. I think it took about 4 or 5 months to really see the change but now people who haven't seen her in a while can't believe she is the same dog. She definitely seems to feel part of the pack! She did take it hard when I went away for a few days (even though my parter was still here) and went back a bit but I suppose she has to get used to it! Thanks so much for all of your support. its difficult to see how it is going to get better sometimes but it defineitly has. x

I've had mine 2yrs 9mths and 1yr 5mths and they are still changing (mainly for the better!) and are massively different now to the dogs that first came to live with us. It seemed to take ages at the time, but when I look back it seems like nothing at all.
When you get your second you'll be a lot more relaxed about it. It's really worth the wait - mine are lovely now - not perfect - but we both love them to bits.
