Hi all
My Layla has always had a bit of dry skin going on since I got her. Took Lisa's advise and started giving her Evening Primrose oil capsules (4 a day), but it didn't seem to help. No worse, but no better either.
Then someone suggested Salmon Oil, which I read up on and it seemed to be like primrose oil on steroids, so thought I'd give it a go. I have been trying that for last 3 weeks now (5 teaspoons a day) but it has not helped, in fact condition seems to have got worse. She looks like she has really bad dandruff. She is not scratching any more than usual so it doesn't seem to be causing her any discomfort, but will have to change her name to Speckle if it continues!
Any thoughts/suggestions, else I'll take her to vet and have it properly checked out.
Thanks K

Greys can go very dandruffy if they're stressed so that may be part of it if she's just retired .... My Lucy had poor skin and coat so I worked my way thro a few things ... EPO, Salmon Oil, regular dollops of pilchards (in tomato sauce) then eventually got to Yumega Oils - the Show Dog oil is the richest and I added Yumega's Boost to it - that's a probiotic to help her digest it properly I changed the Show Dog oil to Mirra-coat oil and Boost and that's the two that have really helped her J xx

Thanks for reply, was just having a look at that Yumega product so may give it a go. One question though, is there a minimum length of time I should use these oil supplements for, before giving up and moving on?
I saw a comment on one site saying it took 3 weeks before any improvement was seen, so am wondering if i should persevere a bit longer with this salmon oil?

Whenever I pick up a new dog from kennels I always shower them using Neutrogena shampoo, it improves their coat so much. I'd continue with the salmon oil if I were you and not keep changing. Also this time of the year they are moulting and do get scurfy. Also you could try adding sardines to her diet, mine have a tin between them so not a great amount (added to their breakfast occasionally) Don't worry about it, it'll be all shiny soon

I'd probably give it a bit longer than 3 weeks, like Andywillow says their coats are changing and it's suddenly gone quite chilly so that can make their coats look dull ... Once you've finished the Salmon Oil you can always try one of the Yumega ones I add a lot of water to mine's food too cos greys rarely drink enough J xx

My two have gone dandruffy in the last few weeks while they are moulting. I give 2-3 EPO caps daily (human sort), and a dollop of coconut oil with breakfast. They are both black and can look very glossy, but closer inspection always reveals a few white flakes. I'm only 2 years in to greyhound matters, but moulting and dandruff do seem to go together. Rest of the time they don't look too bad. Lena has been with us 9 months now, and her coat still isn't as good as Gizzi's.
It's either a long job, or a lifetime's work!!!
