Wobbles is a long haired lurcher with a mix of greyhound, german shepherd and either deerhound or wolfhound. He was picked up as a stray and taken to the local pound, from there he was taken in by Greyhound Gap. After 18 months in Gap's kennels, in which time no one showed any interest in adopting him, he became very depressed and shut down. He showed little enthusiasm for walks and the main things in his life were his food and toys which he guarded with his life.
While in the kennels he caught a virus which made him quite ill and even more lethargic and Lisa, Gap's founder, was concerned about his future. One of our wonderful volunteers and refular kennel hound walker, Val, offered to take him home despite being “full up” with her own dogs and fosters. When he arrived home the change in him was amazing, he perked up immediately in the company of other dogs and though his house training left a lot to be desired he was perfectly well behaved.
Due to his illness and the fact that it took a few courses of antibiotics to get him better he had a full blood tests. It was discovered that he had a very low white cell count which means he can’t fight off infections. After several more tests his white cell count is still falling. The results are confusing for our vet and the labs as with this sort of result he should be really quite ill, but he seems to be in good health and very happy. The concern, however, is that there is an underlying condition which may well manifest itself in the future. With this in mind it was decided that he became a sponsor dog with Greyhound Gap and Val is delighted that Lisa has let him stay with her for the rest of his life.
Wobbles also has problems with his feet resulting from, we think, being malnourished as a pup and from being used as a working dog as a youngster before his bones had matured. This results in him not being able to walk very well and he is on painkillers for this.
Since being with Val he has continued to behave impeccably, he likes people and other dogs and has shown no sign of the possessiveness with food and toys he had in the kennels. He loves his walks even though it is sometimes painful for him and no way will he be left behind , in fact he is first through the door!
