Mavis is a Bedlington bitch who came into Gap's care from a stray pound environment in 2009. As far as Bedlington Terriers go Mavis is tiny - weighing in at around 8kg and standing just 14 inches tall! However, do not let that tiny body fool you! Behind the little dog is a big temperament. Having been rehomed she sadly had to come back to Gap after proving she was not very keen on living alongside another terrier. When Mavis arrived she had multiple ongoing health problems. She has obviously been used as a brood bitch and it took us a long time to stop her producing milk. Her ear hair was massively grown in and her ears were in a terrible mess. It still causes her problems now and she is a regular visitor to the vets for drops to help them. She suffers with skin problems; which is helped by her following an extremely strict diet. She can only eat salmon and potato Wafcol and have fish skin treats. Anything else, including little bits of food she might steal, causes her skin and ears to flare up. When Mavis is around you need eyes in the back of your head to ensure that she cannot scavenge (and she likes to try!) anything she is not supposed to have. Mavis has been extremely lucky in finding a new home with her Mum and Dad Dorothy and Trevor who adore her. Mavis has everything she could possibly wish for. Due to her ongoing health problems and medication, Mavis remains one of our merry band of Sponsor Dogs. Just thought I would let you know how Mavis is progressing. We call her Maisie and she gives us a great deal of pleasure. She no longer scavenges as she has a dish of tuna (in spring water ) always available as well as water to drink and salmon and potato wafcol. she doesn't over eat but food has ceased to be a problem as it is always there. She sleeps on top of the covers on our bed and lies on her own cushion on the couch when she wishes during the day. We have just been to Northumberland on holiday where we rented a dog friendly cottage and she was good as gold. We thoroughly enjoy having her and she seems happy and contented, She still has ears that irritate her sometimes and needs ear drops , but apart from this she has no other regular medication.

I remember 'Mavis' as i used to walk her at kennels. She was the first beddie, I'd seen in the flesh, so I didnt realise she was small for the breed(she's the size of my cavaliers), until I noticed that some, I saw later, were much bigger.

A very, very sad day for all of us here at Greyhound Gap. Mavis one of our long term supported sponsor dogs sadly had to be put to sleep this morning after a fit they could not bring her out of... When Mavis arrived with us from the stray pound in 2009 she had multiple ongoing health problems. She has obviously been used as a brood bitch and it took us a long time to stop her producing milk. Her ear hair was massively grown in and her ears were in a terrible mess. It sadly continued to cause her problems through her life and she was a regular visitor to the vets for drops to help them. She also suffered with serious skin problems and had to adhere to a very strict diet of salmon and potato or her skin and her poor bottom which was also an awful mess when she landed with scar tissue from poor care would flare up. The whole of her life Mavis had to be watched like a hawk as even stealing a piece of bread the birds had dropped into the garden was known to make her very seriously ill. The decission was made for Mavis to remain a Gap dog for life and to be supported throughout her remaining time. Mavis was lucky enough to find a permanant foster home for life with the lovely Trevor and Dorothy and they absolutely doted on her, she was most certainly their little Princess and Mavis had all the love in the world. I can not begin to imagine just how bereft they are feeling today. All my love and thoughts are with them. Sleep tight Mave the Rave you will be loved and missed always. You may have been the tiniest bedlington we ever had through Gaps doors but you were certainly the most fiesty.
