I have been with my vet for many years & don't have any complaints, but the issues I'm having with Solly & his "cold" are making me wonder if I should get a 2nd opinion. Is it OK just to go to another vet for advise & more or less start from scrach with new vet. Or should I tell my vet I want a 2nd opinion & ask for him to make available any tests & medication he's persrcribed available for new vet. (I only want anothers imput & have no intention to completely change vet).

Personally I think I'd be asking for a referral to see a specialist as its gone on for so long now

Last summer one of the vets we saw was out of his depth analysing blood test results so he contacted another greyhound specialist vet to get clarification. Agree with what has been said, your dog's health is the most important issue. A GP doesn't know everything about every illness or complaint in us.

As I understand it your vet cannot refuse to refer your dog for a second opinion if you ask him to ... he can apparently refuse to send the referral vet x-rays cos legally they belong to your 'old' vet tho I've always had x-rays sent on to new referral vets tho I have had to nag and nag my old vet to send them or I've taken them in the old days before emails etc. In my experience some referral vets want to do their own tests which obviously bumps up the cost but I can understand why if the x-rays etc aren't good. Totally agree with Jodav .. you're not saying your old vet is rubbish ... you just want another (specialist) opinion on your dog ...GP's can't know everything and I'd hate not to have identified a problem for teh sake of not wanting to upset my 'old' vet by asking for a referral Good luck with him, hope you get to the bottom of Solly's problem soon J xx
