Bonnie has lovely white teeth (all the better for biting you with haha!!) but yesterday I noticed that one of her canines has gone brown. Any ideas what it could be - I am really worried that as the other teeth are still white, it means this one is rotten and she will have to have it removed - but it will be so sad her only having one fang!! I am not looking forward to the vet having to look at her teeth, as her muzzle will have to come off!

It could be that it's had a knock which has damaged the blood supply so it's effectively dead rather than just decay. If so it won't be as good as the others but unless it becomes wobbly or does starts to go bad it's fine. One of Bod's little front ones has been brown as long as he's been with us and it's fine, I just check it's not getting wobbly now and then. Fingers x that's all it is

Funnily enough, one of Twirly's canine teeth has become horribly discoloured recently: Brownish with a pronounced dark red streak. She has chronic gum issues anyway, bless her, but we were really concerned (it looked so horrid that we thought it must be hurting her) so we took her to the vet's. The vet said that she might have pulpitis, but he doubted that because she doesn't appear to be in acute pain and is eating and playing fine. Next in line is possibly injury by trauma (which is very likely knowing Twirly and her 3000 miles-per-hour lifestyle ;D), which can injure the nerves and blood supply to a tooth causing it to die, often painlessly. The tooth isn't wobbly at all, so he said we just need to watch her for signs of distress and if her tooth dies but stays in-situ, solid and painless, then so be it - even if looks horrid . I hope Bonnie stays fine . Her million dollar smile now just has added character ;D ;D Jo x

Maggie had one brown canine tooth when we had her. She had no problems with it in the eight years she was with us. As already mentioned, we presumed it was a knock and a bleed in the tooth but kept an eye on it, and asked the vet to take a look whenever we were there. She too, was a nutter and probably smacked it up being daft. Emma x

Thanks for your reassuring replies! Took Bonnie to the vet yesterday and he said the only way of telling the cause is to get her in for an x-ray under sedation - and not worth it unless she is in pain. The vet survived by making me peel back Bonnie's lip while he stood at a distance to look at the tooth!! He even made me do the kennel cough vaccination - should have asked for a discount!!!

That's good, glad it isn't just Bonnie! It was a lovely new vet actually, he was very understanding. Poor Bonnie was standing in the corner of the room shaking most of the time. It is so sad seeing her like that!
