Tally (ebony) is doing really well. There is just one thing that worries me, and i'm sure it worries me and not her. She will not go to the toilet when we are out walking, no matter how long we are out!!! she waits until we are back home and then will go in my yard or garden. Has anyone else experienced this? It isn't a problem really, other than it worries me she is uncomfortable as she sometimes will wait for hours before going!! but then I am sure if she was really desperate she would go. She has learnt what 'toilet' means when she is outside and I try to encourage her with this when we are walking but nothing doing!!! ive never experienced this before with my other dogs !!!

We have had dogs in the past that would wait until they were in their own garden before relieving themselves no matter how long they had to wait. I'm sure if she was absolutely desperate Tally would go on your walks, but I shouldn't worry myself if I were you. At least you don't have to pick up and find a suitable bin if she waits until she is home. Jackie x

When I first adopted Daisy, she wouldn't go for a poo away from the garden. I completely ignored it and let her find her own comfort zone but the first time she did poo on a walk I gave her loads of praise and a treat and within a very short space of time she was happily pooing away from home I wouldn't worry about it as long as she is eliminating normally elsewhere as you may find "encouraging her to go" may come across as a little anxious, which may cause her to clam up even more.

One of my dogs was the same, he took a while before he would 'perform' on a walk. I never really thought about it and never encouraged him to go when on a walk. Dogs have to feel comfortable to toilet and at the moment Tally seems to be happier to go in the garden. She hasn't been with you very long, give her time and just enjoy having her around, she'll settle down and relax at her own pace. Be thankful it's not the other way round and you had to keep taking her on a walk to go !!

Tilly is the same..saves it up for the gravel area in our back garden and Maddy has learned from Tilly. But its easy to pick up and spray with mistral When we are away at work, we have a gravel area outside so they go on that so fortunately we've no problem, but in some circumstances I can imagine it could create big problems.

I'd keep encouraging her to go away from home if possible though, in case you ever want to go off for a day......or a week!!

Alot of dogs in a new environment/with new owners do not toilet on walks to begin with. Its based around vulnerability and a sign they are not yet fully relaxed/trusting of environment or to begin with for a while the new person to keep them safe. If you think about it logically when urinating and defecating this is when the dogs are at their most vulnerable should something bad happen/they be attacked a slight throw back probably as has been suggested to when dogs were wild. This again is where you sometimes get the shy pooers from the ones who take themselves off behind bushes etc. In time it may relax and usually does and they start to toilet when out but some do continue only pooing in their own garden permanantly. Its nothing to worry about.

Erin used to be like it she still is a little bit when we go on a new walk. But as she settled and gained in confidence she went more and more while on walks. As a child we had a dog who would never go unless in the garden. But sure its nothing to worry about.

Be thankful it's not the other way round and you had to keep taking her on a walk to go !! Yes definitely! When Beaut was here she didn't like to go in the garden she was so clean, she carried that on into her new home so they have to walk her to get her to poo. Dilly terrier was the same at first on walks she wouldn't wee or poo but a few weeks on she is much more confident and will do both

Jet was the same - at first we wouldn't even wee in the yard . Fortunately that has changed with time , but he has to be taken out to poo. ( actually quite useful as we have a shared yard!)

Sonia hates to 'go' in the garden, Daley will, but now prefers to go on a walk, only going in the garden only if desperate. The downside to this is that we get the smelliest farts when they really really need to go

Sonia hates to 'go' in the garden Ditto - Trace point blank refuses to ever go in the garden, even when in the past she has had diarrhoea in the middle of the night - yep that's right, it's grab any available clothing and plod around, sometimes in the cold pouring rain, until she finds the correct piece of grass Somebody suggested to me having another dog poo in the garden but our other dog has toileted in the garden and Trace is having none of it ;D ;D Jo

Many years ago now my beautiful Boxer bitch Hattie would not do anything other than in the garden. We got her when she was 18 months old and knew nothing about her. When I eventually gave up someone suggested a longer lead because she may like her privacy when going. I did not think it would work but I was wrong . Maryx

Before I met him, Ade had a collie who worked sheep, she was with him 24 hours a day, and they would be in the fields all day, but she would only toilet at home Emma x
