Hi again everyone.
This might be me being a little on the thick side... What exactly is a Martingale collar and is it used to replace walking collars or house collars. I adopted two greyhoundss. As some of you may already know...
I would like to treat them to a new collar, something a bit more cheerful than the ones from the rescue centre but all the usual buckle collars as pretty much the same.
Thanks

A martingale collar is an alternative to the fishtail collars that you were probably given by the rescue. With all sighthounds you need a collar that won't slip over their little heads I took these photos some time back to try and illustrate how a martingale works, with my greyhound girl Sibs modelling!! The collar fits like this so it closes up when your greyhound strains on it: But is comfortable and loose otherwise: Personally, I wouldn't use a martingale as a house collar, lots of us use simple 'clip collars' in the house.....and believe me many of our greyhounds have better wardrobes than we do ;D ;D We are VERY fortunate that we have some dedicated and talented collar makers at Gap, the proceeds from sales go directly to saving dogs You can buy martingales and clip collars from our online shop: www.greyhoundgap.com/merchandise/online-shop

The idea of the martingale is that it will close up behind the ears and prevent the collar from slipping off the head as the head of a greyhound is smaller than the neck (unlike most other dogs) so it is a safety collar but I entirely agree with samburns that they are not ideal for in the house as they can easily get caught on things. Mine always wear a 1" tag collar in the house, just something to grab them by quickly if necessary and also for their name tag to be on them at all times. When they go out they wear a martingale for leadwork. Mine actually wear a martingale & a harness with a double ended leash as they are very nervous hounds and spook easily and I do not want to lose them under any circumstances.

Mine *do* wear their Marts in the house all the time and they have never caught on anything. But we don't really have things around that they can get caught on.

Cath (above) very kindly made a beautiful martingale collar for Brooke as she is such a small greyhound - whippet size was too small and greyhound to large - it is a fantastic collar and she has never managed to escape while wearing it out on walks no matter how she twirls!

Mine *do* wear their Marts in the house all the time and they have never caught on anything. But we don't really have things around that they can get caught on. I once came home and found Tara (our old girl no longer with us) hung on the kitchen cupboard door by her martingale Mine all have one inch collars now for their tags. Oh and when we had the kitchen done I made sure the door handles were hound friendly ;D

i didn't mean to offend Cath, it's just I remember 2 particular incidences when others had a heart-stopping moment. One, who was very luckily there at the time, had her hound catch his loop on the fridge/freezer handle and just stopped it toppling over on him. The other one heard screaming from the garden and raced out to find her dog had got caught on the scrolls of a wrought iton gate. As he panicked he was twisting it round and strangling himself. She had to race back in to find scissors to cut him free. I love the martingales but they come out with their walking gear, the rest of the time they wear little 1" tags collars with quick release buckle or velcro catch

No offence taken at all ;D ;D
I made tag collars for mine to wear in the house and Bren escaped the first time I grabbed her- her head is simply smaller than her neck so a tag collar was useless the same as a fishtail collar is. So now they wear their marts and a tag collar but we don't have any sticky out handles and OH is in all day with them so the risks are minimised.
