Oh dear,we've just come back off our hoildays and the girls have been on the beach and in the sea and there leather collars are just slightly the worse for wear to say the least. The leather has gone all crispy, the brass work is shot and the triggers are all knackerd with salt water I hasten to add these were not collars from sliverhippo and for beach adventures the girls will wear fabric collars in futre to prevent such disaters!! So now I have the terrible task of designing my girls all new collars They'll also be needing new fabric ones from helen 7 for there september jollybobs too Although I sense these designs could take a while as there's just sooo much lovley choice Clare you may regret opening the next pm you recive from me

Sorry to hear that your collars didn’t take well to a dip in the sea. Leather and salt water don’t go very well together.
Just as a note from doing some leather restoring, cracked leather can be restored somewhat (not to its former glory but you can get some good results).
I would take the collars and wash them in clean water and leave them to dry naturally to remove the salt. Once they are dry apply an oily dubbin. I like the Kiwi select sport dubbin as it is very oily and an oily gel is just what is called for. I use my fingers and apply it liberally over all of the collars including the brass work. I rub it into the leather and then apply another coat till the oil sits on the surface of the leather. The collar should then be left for a day or 2 and any remaining oil removed with a soft cloth. The collars should be a lot softer at that point as the oils will have been replaced and the surface should be better. Though how much better depends on the extent of the initial damage.

Thanks Clare i'll have a go but I think they'll definalety be reduced to dossing collars.....all the better for nice shiny new ones

So I managed to buy some outrageous shocking pink and black hair on leather and will be making a small amount of collars in this if there is any interest. This image shows the colour best The collars I can do so far are buckle collars with a layer of bridal leather on the inside to give strength and a layer of hair on hide on the outside for the look. Due to the thickness this gives they can't be lined but the inner layer has the smooth side of the leather so should be smooth against the neck. I should also be able to do slip collars in this style. I am also working on other designs but these are very much in the development stage at the moment. One point to note is that hair on hide will eventually shed especially in buckle areas as the hair gets rubbed off. I am tempted to make one of these for Tara as well.

I think Merlin might find it rather unmanly to wear a pink and black furry collar (he drew the line at butterflies the other day too!) - would it be so very wrong to indulge in having a girlie greyhound so that I can have the pink collar ... ??!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

Can I say that those leather collars are absolutely beautiful... you are very talented. I know from experience that sea water and leather doesnt mix.. but my lot are saving up their pennies now to maybe buy some for ' best'!
