Poor Alexa is such an enthusiastic tail wagger that she often knocks the tip of her tail and it bleeds turning our house into a scene from CSI with blood splattered on the walls, ceiling etc. This happens maybe once ever couple months and its only the tail tip. The skin isn't broken but looks really bruised. I've had to resort to wrapping a bit of human plaster around it during the day as anything else is just flicked off. Anyone out there had this problem?

Yes. My foster dog, Holly, was nicking her tail every day with her enthusiastic tail wagging. I had blood up the walls, too. She now has it bandaged at the very end and it doesn't seem to bother her at all. ;D

You need to still get air to the tail tip to allow it to dry up. The best thing to do to protect it is to put on the bottom end of a tampax tube as they now have cut out flaps. Vet wrap around that but leave the air flowing to the end. Then seal it at the bottom onto the tail. Its a nightmare because unless you really secure it it will wag off. I hate docking dog breeds but I swear greyhounds should have been born without a tail as they are a nightmare We were meant to be moving 2 dogs at the weekend and both split their tails simaltaneously in the space of erm 2 minutes in the pound and then Eden decided to do hers before she went home on Saturday.

Thanks guys. The tampax tube solution is truly inspired!

When Fanta split his tail my vet put a piece of foam insulating tube on the end, the stuff used for pipes, it worked a treat and because it was foam it didn't catch the walls at all. You just have to ensure it is secured to the tail really well. Sadly for Fanta as soon as the pipe was taken off he split his tail again, and again so he ended up with a stumpy one... I have a thing for stumpy tail hounds it would seem
