Up until last autumn I used to feed brown bread with the dogs meals - then my vet said not to as she said it ferments in their stomach. Since giving up the bread my two bitches have had problems with their anal glands - I'm going back to the brown bread - greyhounds have been eating brown bread for years and it is good for keeping weight on! Any thoughts? have been told that wheat bran or oatmeal can help, you could mention it to the vet next time you go. Ours have the odd slice of bread on its own as a treat, they love it. I thought it was raw dough that fermented. That's interesting, my father would never feed our dogs bread when we were children, unless it had been sliced and baked hard in the bottom of the AGA, so I do the same but I don't know why!

Good to try all the ideas of addition to diet but I think it's a real help if you get your vet to show you how to empty the glands yourself. I used to do it for Suzie and it was great to be able to put a stop to her discomfort as soon as it became apparent. I know some people might be squeamish about it, but honestly it's ok once you know how and really simple! ;D I HAVE BEEN ASKED IF I WANT TO BE SHOWN HOW ! I guess i should....
