Not entirely sure how it happened but we've got our first foster, a young black and white greyhound Madison. She's from the local rescue we got Gracie from. They rang to say they are full and desperate for space. She's small, sweet and not sure if she's raced. She appears to have been in a home, nothing has fazed her including a few grumbles from the others. Doesn't look like a racer and hasn't got scars, in good condition. We walked right past a cat which was sat in front of us and she never moved a muscle, totally unconcerned by it even when it eventually ran. Was picked up by the dog warden about 4 wks ago. Tried to check her tattoo but its an odd one, hard to decipher and the site didn't seem to be working. The rescue have done as much as they can to find her owner, not chipped and was in season when picked up. Problem is she's been for 2 walks (very good on lead) and done poos but won't wee, she's done 2 in the house despite being taken out every hour, last one was only about 10 mins after her walk. Any advice on this please? My crate's too small and the house is open plan so she'll have a choice of beds and I'm hoping not to get up to lots of puddles . They think she's about 2, got perfect teeth. Seems so sad she has obviously been looked after. Will post some pics but she turns her head every time I try to take some and didn't want to stress her chasing her round, not that she seems stressed. Anyone looking for a sweet non -aggressive most likely cat friendly girl? Rescue behaviourist said they can't find a prey drive at all. (they're currently renting space at a greyhound trg yard but it was there or no- where and their staff can't find it either ;D) Vicky ETA- typical hound, found sofa in 10 secs, roaching away in 10 mins ;D

Are you taking her out every hour and waiting for her to go before bringing her back in?

Are you taking her out every hour and waiting for her to go before bringing her back in? Trying, but she just won't go, just been outside for 15 mins but she wouldn't go, walked over all the others favourite spots and tried virgin territory but still no go. We were both starting to shiver she's had a small bowl of food and has drunk a fair bit. Have to admit not got much experience of toilet trg.

When Lola first came to us, admittedly she was toilet trained already, but there was a few accidents, and she would not perform in anyone's presence. Never on walks, and not while we were in the garden.
We used to have to let her go outside on her own, while we peeked behind twitching curtains. Eventually when she did a wee we'd immediately open the door calling "Good girl Lola! Lola wee wees!" and give her a treat. It didn't take long before we could open the door for her to go out and call "Lola wee wees!" and she would head straight out and do it. And now she is fabulous at doing it promptly and conveniently on lead, and it's Barney who makes us meander for ages while he finds just the right spot!
I bet the neighbours love it when we're calling Lola wee wees at the back door at midnight every night LOL!

ruby used to do this, have you got a long line? if so try getting her on the end of a long line and making her run around when you know shes not weed for a while. Hopefully the runing will make it so that she has to wee (us women know that running with a fullish bladder makes us want to pee )when shes does make a big fuss of her for reward. It worked for Ruby and she went from been dirty to clean in days. annax

The 1st couple of days are usually spent to-ing & fro-ing to the garden. I just keep shipping them out every hour for 5 minutes, even during the night I am usually up a couple of times.
When they are inside I keep an eye on them & the slightest hint they are wanting to wee i.e sniffing or pacing, out they go.

I'm at a loss, its 12.40 pm and she's not had a wee since 10pm last night We've been out all morning, Trix had to be at vets at 9 & 11 for her cushings blood test so Maddy came too. Was out with her midnight, 3 and 6.30am, freezing for 15 mins each time, in garden, up and down road, on lge piece of grass across the road on a long line, not a drop. then a walk pre vets, in between and after vets. Eating and drinking ok. Tried Annas long line idea, all been playing with balls and squeaky toys outside running about. She had a poo outside before we went for first walk. They're all settled having afternoon naps now, she's curled up in a basket. Does anything jump out as being wrong? I'm feeling a bit worried. Keep looking round house to see if I've missed a puddle. Saw another cat, she just looked at it, it hissed and she jumped behind me as if to say save me . Seen lots of dogs, been totally unreactive with them all, even tiny ones. Just wee pleease...........................

I'm hoping you don't have to wee outside to show her what she should be doing. Won't she wee in the garden if you leave her outside on her own, sometimes they are a bit shy about doing it in front of you. Was she turned out in her kennel & was she clean in her kennel do you know?

It sounds like the poor girl is terrified. Dogs retain their urine when they are scared of a new environment. You are going to have to persevere. She needs taking out every fifteen minutes and you will literally have to stand with her till she goes even if this means two hours believe me ive had to do it. Otherwise she will continue to retain till the second your back is turned then pass urine as its safe to do so. You really need to get hold of a crate big enough to contain her so that when you are not in a position to watch her you can place her in there till you are then you can put her out again. I would imagine if the other dogs have had a growl at her she feels vulnerable and when a dog urinates they stop and this is when they are most at risk of attack. She needs a quiet space to call her own at the moment whilst she settles in and a crate really is the best option. An open plan house is way to much responsibility for a dog who by the sounds of it I will be honest probably hasnt been in a home before, if she has she wouldnt have a concept of toiletting outside be that on walks or in the garden.
I would also be going out to get a Dap diffuser if you havent already got one and giving her a good dose or rescue remedy both in her mouth and in her drinking water.
Also you say she was in season when the rescue took her in. Has she come out of this now and how long ago and has she been spayed? Bitches who are in season, expecting pups or even spayed after a season once they have been mated are prone to urintating in the house mapping out space for where she would plan to have her babies. If she has been spayed and had been mated the chances are she is moving into a phantom pregnancy.

Got dap going yesterday, will give her remedy. Took her out with just Trix who was pottering off lead away from her so the other 2 weren't too much for her. She is quite timid, another dog had a go at her in the rescue and she didn't have a go back. She's doesn't seem bothered by anything in the house at all, and ran straight upstairs, jumps on bed, roaches on sofa, in basket, there seem to be a lot of contradictions, such as how she poos happily on walks and outside, not inside, yet not wees. She's been out of season 2 weeks, so not spayed yet, they say leave it about 3 months, that seemed a bit long but it's so long since Trix was done I forget.
She does seem to have big nipples and one has some soft tissue round it, I did wonder about pregnancy/false one. She wasn't fully clean in her kennel think they are all turned out a bit. Tried leaving her outside alone but she stands at the door, she's just desperate to get back in. She seems to watch me the minute I move and follows me but then looks very relaxed in her basket and roaches and twitches her paws in her sleep. Thanks everyone.
eta- so even if she's out by herself she'll still retain if she's that terrified? she doesn't seem frightened but I think you're spot on Lisa.

Vicky if she has just come out of season and was picked up by the rescue in season as a stray I would put you £1000 on it that this bitch is pregnant. That will be half of your answer why she is retaining and peeing indoors when your not looking. She will know she is pregnant feel vulnerable and be looking to mark out her area.
If a bitch has been wondering in season and the rescue leaves it for 3mnths before spaying her that is 12 weeks. The puppies land on week 9 so she is probably already 2 - 4 weeks pregnant and if they arnt going to do something about it then you are going to have to prepare yourself for puppies. I suggest she is spayed NOW! If this was a Gap dog and there was a chance of a pregnancy she would have been spayed within a week of coming out of season.
I think you need to speak to this rescue and NOW! Even if she was a hand in from a home you cannot trust that she hasnt been mated.
I would say hand on heart how things stand at the moment you have puppies on the way if its not sorted and sorted quickly whilst its still humane to do so.

Thanks x Vicky, I have a crate you can borrow. I was going to offer it when I read your first post on this thread but wasn't sure you wanted one. If you can collect it though, that would be great, as I'm poorly at the mo and a bit tied up with stuff ;D
