I contacted axa who told me they are no longer doing dog insurance - so I'm sticking with Petplan. That's strange as I only took ours out 3 wks ago online, just had all the documents this week and they are still doing on-line quotes, just checked. It's a whole new financial world right now, wonder if they are just doing it on-line. www.axa.co.uk/petinsurance/Vicky

In my experience if you don't insure you'll need it and if you do insure you won't Sods law I think, but both my cat (after £600 in vets fees) and dog are insured. So far the only vet bill's I've had have only just been over the excess.

I contacted axa who told me they are no longer doing dog insurance - so I'm sticking with Petplan. I took out a new policy with Axa on 1st October for Daisy, so they are definately still providing cover online. Personally, I wouldn't be without insurance now as in his first year with us we claimed around £4000 for ongoing treatment for Mayo. This included £1000 for intestinal biopsies and £700 for a 2 day stay to carry out barium meals and x-rays (we discovered the cause of his illness was a tablet which had stuck in his throat) Our uninsured cats treatment cost us £700 following a road accident, when she was 12. She is now almost 16 and still rules the roost Moira x

That is very strange about AXA - because I wanted a quote for more than one dog I rang them up and they said they were not doing dog insurance any more and I even pointed out that their website was still offering it - very odd - but think I'll stick to Pet Plan for the moment. Thanks everyone!

I wonder if they are only doing it on-line now, some companies do that. I just rang them to query something and they are still there!

Our first lurcher got cushings and was uninsured, we had to pay about £200 every 6 weeks for her tablets.
We then insured our current dogs as they came along. Jake has an enlarged heart and his insurance more than pays for the tablets he has each year.
Ellie has problems with her back and her hydro and cartrophen injuections are insured.
Joe has just ruptured his cruciate and his xray and op has already come to over £650, and we still have the hydro, massage and any other tablets, consultations to go.
For our 9 is comes to about £160 per month, but it has definitely been worth it.
However my first dog had nothing wrong with him all his life and was never insured. It just depends if you can take the risk and if you are disciplined enough to put the money away should an expense occur.
