We rehomed Tig three and a half years ago when he was 5 1/2, through the greyhound rescue here in Jersey. He retired from racing when he was 4 1/2 and went on to have four homes, in between was in various rescue centres and kennels. He was in foster care when we decided to take him.
Within a few days we found out he was still a very keen chaser, (anything that moved) and were told we would never rehabilitate him. One year on, he walks off lead without a muzzle, will greet any dog (if only for a few minutes). He does sit, sit stay, down, down stay, he also lays on his side and plays dead. Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
We've been very happy with just having Tig around, and weren't really thinking of getting another dog. That is until I saw a picture of Zeb on the GG site. I fell in love with him as soon as I saw him, the hard part was persuading Kevin.
He soon came around though and even went over to Wales to pick him up. (He hates boats). Zeb was in foster care with Sian only an hour away from my mum's, so Kev picked him up and took him there for a couple of days to see how the two boys would get on.
On the first night they actually shared a bed, an excellent start. He's been home with us all in Jersey for a week now and is settling in nicely. He's still very nervous of strangers and strange noises but hopefully this will improve with time. He's very much a daddy's boy, following Kevin around like his shadow.
We have, however, got our work cut out for ourselves again, as he is also still a very keen chaser and does get a little over excited when he sees another dog. The difference between Zeb and Tig is, Tig was and still is very food orientated, and so was very easy to distract. I think Zeb may be a little trickier. But we will find something that works for him, and hopefully in a years time he will be a different dog.
As soon as I get a decent camera I will post some piccies of my boys.
