Very sadly, Chance's owner died recently so he is looking for a new sofa! Currently in Surrey in his own home, this is what his owner's daughter said about him ....
We're not sure about Chance's history, but we do know that he was roaming the streets of Windsor prior to taking him in. He has a wonderful loving relationship with women, but can be a little wary of men and not as forthcoming. Saying that, and as Dad proved, over time he learns to trust men he is familiar with. I wouldn't suggest young children with Chance. My two daughters have loved him like their own (teenagers), and he is completely relaxed in their presence, loving, and appreciates snuggling up on the sofa with them. He's quite a couch potato and doesn't require much exercise, as my Father was unable to walk him over the last year due to diabetes problems. He was only ever kept on the lead, but his reactions to other dogs can be quite severe, although Dad managed to avoid such confrontations with him. He did present like this since my Father took him on from Windsor, and we have never been able to correct this. We believe that he may have been abused in some way by a man with a stick, and he becomes slightly worried when stroking near his hindquarters, but again, will soon relax once he knows this isn't threatening.
Chance has been castrated, and has been microchipped. However, I believe his last jab is overdue, as my Father was unable to get him to the vets in time for the last one to run out. This will be done before rehoming. He was born on 1st March 2008, although this may be a "guess" from Battersea (Windsor). He's not very energetic, and quite frankly, prefers to snuggle up to someone than ever sleep independently on the floor - I believe Dad's bed may have been a daily sleep option too where he'd just take himself off for a rest and you'd wonder where he disappeared to! He hasn't had any veterinary problems at all since my Father has owned him, there was only ever the mention of a very slight heart murmur. The only times this is evident, is if Chance has been running around in the house on a "mad session" and he will cough, but soon recovers. But the vet who has been looking after him, did not have any concerns and said this was normal. He stands from floor to shoulder, about 25 inches. He definitely should not be kept around cats or small animals as hiss "instincts" seem to take over being a Lurcher!
All in all, he's a beautiful boy and I want the very best for him. He was totally spoilt by my Father, and has not shown any aggression since he's had him. Merely just the odd worried expression on his face if presented with strange men who have come into the home where he tends to back off. Women, absolutely no problem, he will just go up to them instantly. I can only suggest again, there is something from his past which has made him this way. Being as I said, that he lived with my Father, this wouldn't be an impossible rehoming option, just maybe somebody who is happy to give him lots of tlc, love and tenderness, and the relationship will flourish, as it has done with my Father.
I was adamant that I wouldn't throw Chance back into a kennelled "rescue" situation again, as this is probably what contributed to his nervous disposition, but I am praying that you could possibly help me in finding him that all important loving home, for his remaining years. It really does break my heart as I don't want to do this, but I truly have no option with my Father's property having to be sold, and me being unable to have him in my home because of my own dog.
Chance is still living at my Father's property in Surrey (near Epsom Downs), and I have a friend living there with him until we are in a position to find him a new home.
If you feel you can offer this dog a chance, please fill in our Pre-Adoption form, here .... www.greyhoundgap.org.uk/homing-and-adoption/pre-adoption-questionnaire marked for the attention of Liz - as normal, all homes will be checked by one of Gap's volunteer homecheckers.
